We have made a handful of different beers to celebrate the beginning of Short’s, but this Anni Ale is our most made, most requested, and arguably our most favorite. You might read “blood orange wheatwine with peppercorns and orange zest” and be like “how the heck will that even work and what the heck will that even taste like?” and we get that. But trust us, we’ve been doing this for 21 years. Our original Short’s beers are old enough to drink themselves now! This beer is a dang delight, a real pleasure-giver full of a depth of flavor you have to experience to understand. Celebrate with us, won’t you?

2025 can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a mostly clear dark gold with a finger of off-white head that lingers. Big blood orange aromas with citrus zest and some floral aromas on the nose. Palate is similar with blood orange only really standing out. I don't get much wheat wine-like character and the peppercorns don't really come out (outside of some floral notes). Citrusy, malty and boozy on the finish.

I was blown away by the first Anniversary Ale that I had in 2012. I made a point of buying several 6-packs each spring. But something changed and they no longer wowed me. I hadn’t seen it in my regular store for several years. Saw it today and bought a 6-pack for the memory and to give it another chance. It’s okay but nothing like the original. The blood orange and peppercorn don’t stand out in this version.

Bottle courtesy of clownoisseur. Pours hazy pale golden with a small frothy offwhite head that leaves some spotty trace on the glass while dissiapting. Smell is malty, fruity and spicy with crackers, caramel, blood oranges grass, pepper corns, minerals, lemon zest and hints of alcohol. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter, very tiny sour, malty, fruity and spicy. Mouthfeel is round, tiny tart, astringent, tiny boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet, bitter and very tiny sour with caramel, blood orange juice and pepper corns. Cool but doesn’t quite manage to balance the different components. --- Beer merged from original tick of Anniversary Ale 2009- on 14 Jul 2016 at 22:00 - Score: 6. Draft: Poured a hazy dirty brown color ale with a small foamy head with OK retention. Aroma of dry wheat notes with some grainy malt notes is typical for style. Taste is a nice mix of dry wheat malt notes, light grainy notes, light residual sugar notes with some subtle blood orange notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not sure the flavours are well-balanced between each other’s but interesting nonetheless.

Bottle shared by Willrunforbeer, much thanks. Copper color with thin whispy head. Aroma shows me citrus, pepper, rasins and pine like essence. The flavor is an odd concoction for orange liquour, zesty peppercorn and a slightly syrupy texture over the palate. The alcohol is hidden pretty well at 10%. Honestly after 6 oz. I had enough. Not undrinkable, just very odd.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange, small off-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves decent lacing. Aroma is oranges, pepper, honey, bready malt. Flavor is pretty sweet, and strongly bitter, orange zest, pepper, honey. Medium plus body, creamy mouthfeel. Definitely interesting, cant really say I enjoy it.

12 ounce bottle. Pours a bright amber color with a medium white head. A interesting nose with floral, pepper and orange notes. The flavor has tartness, orange peel, spicy pepper, a bit of kick in it and alcohol. Unusual. Almost like a well made cocktail. A thin palate.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled 4/20/2012. Pours hazy reddish orange color with a small 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lacing cap that lingers. Slight spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of huge orange, orange zest, orange rind, grapefruit, peppercorn, caramel, coriander, bread, floral, grass, earth, and herbal. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity; with a huge citrus presence as expected. Taste of big orange, orange zest, caramel, grapefruit, orange rind, coriander, peppercorn, floral, grass, earth, and herbal. Light citrus rind tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of orange, citrus rind, grapefruit, peppercorn, coriander, caramel, toast, floral, earth, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic citrus and peppery flavor balance with nice complexity; zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent wheatwine! Great flavor complexity and balance; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

1st January 2011
Hazy deep red beer. Short lived tan head. Pleasant nose of fresh hops and citrus. Smooth palate, dry with moderate carbonation. Fresh hops seamlessly integrated with bitter blood orange. Dry peppery finish. A tad dry but another fantastically imaginative beer from Shorts.
