Baltic Night is a Stout, but not your average stout. Your first encounter will be its very black color and whitish head. It has a well balanced roasted bitterness as well as a hoppy aroma. If you gently position your nose at the centre of your glass, about 1 inch up, you will sense the floral notes of First Gold and Fuggle hops mixed with English barley tempt you. The high percentage of roasted barley that we use to create it also gives it a lovely hint of coffee and a long dry moreish cocoa finish. One of the reasons we are able to use such a high percent of roasted barley is because we have implemented the old continental technique of decoction mashing.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours a very dark brown - close to black - with a vague orange hue and a smallish and rough off-white head. Hard roast malt and a whiff of smoke in the nose. Medium body, sweet licorice and cocoa with hard roasted malts. There’s a vague hard roast tartness underneath. The finish is mostly chocolate with no real bitterness. 050111

Cask (gravity) @ The 16th Reading Beer and Cider Festival 2010, Reading, Berkshire England.Clear dark black brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, coffee beans, cacao dusty. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, coffee - cacao dusty. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. [20100429]

500ml bottle from Bacchanalia, Cambridge. Pours pitch black with a thin ring of tan head, looking rather lifeless; the aroma has rich roasted malts, but seems to lack the expected chocolate or coffee; the body is quite thin and very soft, with a gentle fruity flavour, before a dry drinking chocolate finish. An interesting beer.

Bottle from Millets Farm Shop, Oxon, 16-09-09 Pours almost black with a slim tan head that disappears to leave just a tan rim. Aroma is dusty old cocoa powder with some rustic maltiness. Taste is initially a touch sour but its quite fruity with a bitter chocolate edge, really quite rustic in style and with a nice dryness. I’m not totally convinced that the slightly sour edge is intentional or whether my bottle isn’t in the best condition but on this occasion it doesn’t detract too much and there is still a pretty decent beer in here.
