Aged for 12 months in barrels from the well-regarded port wine producer Niepoort, Hr. Frederiksen ended up as a dark brown rather than a black beer with a discreet but warm orange glow. The foam is soft and beige.
The port reveals itself in the aroma, so much so that for a split second you may be in doubt whether it is beer or port you are drinking. This Niepoort edition is so velvety and rounded, where the woody notes are clear but never dominant. Hr. Frederiksen's normal muscles of roasted malt and Centennial hops are still there, but they are softened and welcoming rather than high-strung.
And then the alcohol naturally warms up as always at the end - but again not "in your face" just so nice and inviting. In the Niepoort version, Hr. Frederiksen is not exactly a beer you just throw down your throat. It is a beer to be enjoyed in meditative moments in your specially decorated Chesterfield living room.

Bottled. Black colour, mediumsized beige head. Aroma is Port, some liquorice, mild alcohol as well as some vanilla and mild brandy tones. Flavour is port/brandy, some vanilla, wood, liquorice, alcohol and mild burnt sugary elements. Quite warming. Good sipper.

Tap @ Borefts 2013. Deep darl color. Porto and vanilla in the aroma. Malt, roast, oak and porto in the flavor. The oak is clearly noticeable. The beer seems dried out a bit. Fruity, even a bit tart finish.

From a 400ml bottle (Batch nr 451, BB 07/2018) on 7/11/2016. Pours a ver dark brown with not much head. Has a quite strong aroma of chocolate and caramel, with some vinous notes in there as well. The flavour is quite powerful and intense, with sweet caramel and chocolate, set off against some strong red wine, spicy and roasty notes, with dollops of bitter licorice. The texture is syrupy and the carbonation is moderate. A very enjoyable, slightly boozy sipper, but doesn’t reach the heights of the standard edition.

Pours dark brown with a fading head.Nose shows red berries, fortified wine, soft woody notes, booze and caramel.Falvours include more fortified wine and booze along with soft roast demonstrating very little complexity.Body feels a bit watery.

This one kicks things off from the get go with the 11% ABV apparent in the aroma. Dark black pour with small skin of a beige head. Aside from the burnt nostril hairs, pit fruit, molasses and wood are detectable in the aroma. taste adds chocolate and a int of vanilla. Warmth throughout.

Black engine oily suff with almost no head at all. The aroma was unfortunately really horrible. Alcohol and nail polish. Tried it really cold and very warm. Still really unpleasant. Maybe something wrong with this bottle. The flavor did not have any signs of infection, but was nothing to write home about either. To much alcohol coming up. Also some chocolate, some fruity notes and coffee. More or less undrinkable.
