Aged for 12 months in barrels from the well-regarded port wine producer Niepoort, Hr. Frederiksen ended up as a dark brown rather than a black beer with a discreet but warm orange glow. The foam is soft and beige.
The port reveals itself in the aroma, so much so that for a split second you may be in doubt whether it is beer or port you are drinking. This Niepoort edition is so velvety and rounded, where the woody notes are clear but never dominant. Hr. Frederiksen's normal muscles of roasted malt and Centennial hops are still there, but they are softened and welcoming rather than high-strung.
And then the alcohol naturally warms up as always at the end - but again not "in your face" just so nice and inviting. In the Niepoort version, Hr. Frederiksen is not exactly a beer you just throw down your throat. It is a beer to be enjoyed in meditative moments in your specially decorated Chesterfield living room.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a medium size dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of coffee and roasted malt with light chocolates notes is pretty pleasant. Taste is also dominated by roasted malt with some light chocolate notes and some light woody notes. Body is quiet full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not as good as the original version and too pricey for its own sake.

Bottle shared at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks fonefan for this bottle! Black with a frothy beige head. Roasty aroma with some coffee, vegetal notes, wood and some vinous notes. Roasty bittersweet flavor with coffee, vinous character, wood, fruitiness and a bitter finish, somewhat burnt and rather boozy. Medium to full-bodied.

At Borefts Beer Festival 2013. Near black with a small tan head. Aroma of licorice and roasted malt, with hops and a touch of wood. Sweetish roasted flavour with fruity and herbal hops. wine and oak notes. Not as good as the clean Hr. Frederiksen, it’s just not a beer for barrel aging

Bottle. Opaque black liquid with small to medium tan head. Aroma of dried fruit, raw sugar, wood, caramel, biscuit, vanilla and toffee. Taste is light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of dried fruit, chocolate and licorice. Medium to full bodied with low to medium carbonation. Ok

Draught @ 5th Borefts Beer Festival 2013, Brouwerij de Molen, Bodegraven, Netherlands. [ As Amager Hr. Frederiksen (Niepoort Edition) ].Clear dark black brown color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting to diminishing, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, coffee, port - tawny, wood, alcohol. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, chocolate, alcohol, wood, dry. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20130927]

Bottle thanks to Blomster. Pours dark brown with brown head. Nose and taste of roast chocolate, port wine, dry toast, orange cognac, oak, roast chocolate, toasted nuts, earthy ash and roast coffee. Full bodied.

Bottle @ Cardinal. Black body with a small, stable beige head. Wonderful aroma with soft roasted malt, dark chocolate, dry fruit, mild oak and pleasant vinous. Flavor is like aroma, soft, pleasant dark malt, dry fruit, chocolate and vinous with a hint of oak. Good balanced bitterness. Fine and balanced body, long lasting aftertaste. Very tasty and really smooth all the way.

@Borefts. Wunderschönes schwarzes Bier mit schöner braunen Schaumkrone. Geruch intensiv röstmalzig, Kaffe, Bitterschokolade, verbrannte Erde, Holzfass. Es schmeckt intensiv nach geröstetem Kaffe, dunkler Schokolade, Teer. Sehr gut!
