Aged for 12 months in barrels from the well-regarded port wine producer Niepoort, Hr. Frederiksen ended up as a dark brown rather than a black beer with a discreet but warm orange glow. The foam is soft and beige.
The port reveals itself in the aroma, so much so that for a split second you may be in doubt whether it is beer or port you are drinking. This Niepoort edition is so velvety and rounded, where the woody notes are clear but never dominant. Hr. Frederiksen's normal muscles of roasted malt and Centennial hops are still there, but they are softened and welcoming rather than high-strung.
And then the alcohol naturally warms up as always at the end - but again not "in your face" just so nice and inviting. In the Niepoort version, Hr. Frederiksen is not exactly a beer you just throw down your throat. It is a beer to be enjoyed in meditative moments in your specially decorated Chesterfield living room.

Bottle picked up at Olbutikken in Copenhagen, dark brown pour, viscous , nutty, dark good stuff. Sweet nose. The taste is bitter, light body, sweet, salty, garlicky, onions but that could be the hummus I am having now. It is good & smooth but it doesn’t have a huge barrel character. Having it later on in the night I get faint peppermint & chocolate in the nose. The body is medium-full, smooth but tastes light, I am getting more oakiness now but compared to Evan Williams it is light. Roasty, bitter, woody quality somewhat tannic. The taste has a boozy bite, am happy I got to have this again after sobering up as we couldn’t appreciate it at the end of the tasting. The barrel character is imperceptible in the nose but somewhat present in the mouth, interesting.

Botella de 50 cl en el lúpulo. 24-01-2014 en el momento. Color negro intenso con espuma marfil persistente. Aromas a licor y madera enpapada de porto. Cuerpo medio fuerte.

Kraftig personlighet men allikevel imøtekommende. Er det lagringen på portvinsfat som har en gunstig innvirkning?

On tap @ Borefts 2013. A as good as black one with a fairly nice medium sized brown bubbly top. Kinda foamy top. Smells nice with lots of licorice and a little smoke. Perhaps even a hint of some good quality chocolate. Smells nice. Oh, it's quite tasty as well. Really different from what I was expecting, and really different from the beer I just had before this. Wet rocks and again that licorice. It's surprisingly light oily on the mouthfeel and soft to average on the carbonation. I like the smoke this generates. It's not the sweet beefy kind, more the wet rock-type and my kind of smoke. Not bad at all. 27.09.2013

Small brown creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is unripe banana, oak, grass, alcohol, cocoa, coffee, almond essence. Taste is slightly dry boozy, dark malts, oak, alcohol, hay, cocoa, grass, almond essence. Longlasting bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Not for me.

Tap at Borefts ’13, 27/09/13. Mid black with a thinnish tan head. Nose is liqourice, roast malt, light plastic, boozey tones. Taste comprises aniseed, roast malt, liqourice, molasses, tar, ash. Medium bodied with bite, boozey finale. Drinkable impy but not one I’d revisit, one dimensional.
