Built with almost entirely German ingredients, the best way we could describe this beer is a “Black Altbier”. (A term which would no doubt have most German purists spitting feathers!).

Not unlike a stout, this beer is black in colour, with a bright white head. But instead of the usual heavy malt character of a stout, “Blacklight” has a light mouth feel, complimented by a pleasing roastiness & balanced with delicate fruit from the German ale yeast.

Can pour at East Side Beer Fest. Pours dark brown with off-white head. Faint toasted malts on the nose. Flavour has dry toasted malt, some dried grass, burnt caramel. Decent, but nothing special.

Poured from the tap. Very dark brown with small beige head. Mild toasted malt, hint of chocolate, touch of brown sugar, and a feint herbal note. Okay.

Dark ruby-black body and minimal head. Apparently Brassneck hates head. Soft aroma of dog hair and pork chops overcooked that I ate as a child. Flavour is a mix of barley and curry, kind of like what I smell when wandering around Surrey these days. Medium finish. Rather odd, but at least it's not fooking boring.

On tap at the brewery. Pours an almost black with a beige head. Aroma and taste are roasted malt, some caramel notes. Roasted malt aftertaste. Light, drinkable. Perfect options for those who likes drinking light dark beers. Not an Altbier though.

Draught at the brewery
Black color with compact head. Dry beer, with dark bread character, a bit too roasty, with a trace of liquorice.
Cleaner than most Stouts, but could easily be mistaken for one of them.

Dark brown. The aroma is toasty with a little woody note as well. Body is light. It does seem like a lagered ale, so they got that aspect of the character right. Mostly toast, chocolate, fairly clean. Nothing really shining but serviceable schwarzbieresque.

Draft - Light sweet roast and coca. Deep jet black with a decent light brown head. Bitter roast and a little perfumy. Style doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it’s OK.

On tap at Brassneck, pours black with a small tan head. Nose and flavour are fairly subtle, with notes of toasted malt, a touch of roast, and German lager yeast. Pretty bland stuff, though nothing off about it at least. Not overly impressive but certainty drinkable.
