Imperial Porter using a blend of 7 different malts.

In terms of hops, we keep the IBUs modest at 35 and hopped the beer entirely with First Gold.

And of course, with Lost Abbey & BrewDog both obsessed with barrel ageing, this collaboration just had to be aged in oak.

We settled on some rum casks for the Imperial Porter, making it the first time either of the respective brewers have aged a beer in rum barrels.

Bottled 330ml (Kaisla, batch 176, bottled on 05-12-11)
A bottle shared with tiong. Dark ruby color, small brown head. Rum, cellar, licorice and raisins in the nose. Medium-bodied. Hides ABV very well. Rum. caramel, light cellar - Innis&Gun on drugs. Mellow. Something Lost Abbeysh here, not so much from BD. Good rum beer, but certainly not the worth of 26 euros ...

330ml bottle @ Kaisla, Helsinki

Batch 176, bottled on 05-12-11 Pours pitch black with a bubbly white head. Aroma of roasted malts, ripe fruits, rum, wood, oak, earthy notes. Taste is malty, slightly sweet and roasty with heavy rum notes, hints of wood, ash, ripe fruits, molasses and chocolate. Finish is malty and sweet with ripe fruits, slight roastiness and heavy rum notes. Reminds me a bit of Lost Abbey’s barrel aged barley wines. A bit unbalanced but still quite tasty.

From a 330ml bottle on 2/5/2012 (batch no.176, bottled 5/12/2011). Pours a very dark amber with very little head. Has a biggish aroma of rum, brown sugar and caramel. In the mouth, it’s incredibly sweet, with more brown sugar, caramel, toffee and a hint of dark fruit. There’s curious little in the way of balancing bitterness though, just a dollop of rummy alcohol. The texture is quite thick and sticky, and the carbonation is on the high side. It actually reminds me more a Belgian Abbey ale than a big porter. I’m normally a sucker for big, sweet beers, and this certainly fits the bill, but it’s a bit too one dimensional and lacking in complexity for me to get too excited about it. Good but not great.

17/04/2012 330ml bottle, shared by Federico & Edo (Faber) @ Brasserie 4:20. Thank you! Gran bella birra!

Bottle @Viisi Penniä, Helsinki. Poured dark brown with a thin white head. Aroma has rum, portwine notes, raisin and wood. Flavor is similar, dark fruity, raisin, sweet dessert wine, St.John Commandaria coming to mind. Long sweet dark fruity finish. Alcohol well hidden. Smooth moutfheel, full bodied. The rum is more evident in the aroma.

Mums.
