Imperial Porter using a blend of 7 different malts.

In terms of hops, we keep the IBUs modest at 35 and hopped the beer entirely with First Gold.

And of course, with Lost Abbey & BrewDog both obsessed with barrel ageing, this collaboration just had to be aged in oak.

We settled on some rum casks for the Imperial Porter, making it the first time either of the respective brewers have aged a beer in rum barrels.

Bottle shared at Brewdog, Camden. Pours clear dark brow with a small tan head. Aroma is rum, vanilla, caramel. Sweet flavour, initially rum, leading into a long vanilla and sweet toffee finish. Normal porter characters don’t seem present, but the BA works well. Full bodied with low carbonation. A great beer!

330 ml bottle in cardboard box, Cardinal Pub & Bar. ABV is 11.5%. Very dark brown colour, nearly black, mahogany in the highlights. Moderate beige head. Strong and impressive aroma of rum barrel (= oak, dark rum, vanilla). Sweet and very malty flavour, again with strong notes of rum barrel, also molasses, caramel, raisins, chocolate and mild coffee. The domination of the rum barrel is no doubt intentional, but as BrewDog are normally not afraid to use hops (to say the least), I think they could have used some more of them here. But by all means, this is a lovely beer, when you want to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Bottle shared by Ajen. Nice, pretty head. Red tints in very dark brown beer. Nose of raisins and rum; a bit simple. Soft, sweet, fruity chocolate and fruit flavor, raisins, wood, rum, cola. Nice stuff, lots of rum.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours dark reddish brown (almost black) with a rather small brownish white head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet with rum, wood, vanilla, alcohol, roasted malts, raisins, chocolate, lemon zest and toffee. Taste is sweet and slightly bitter with rum, wood, alcohol, vanilla, raisins, bitter chocolate, sweetened coffee, liquorice fudge and toffee. Mouthfeel is tiny dry, boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet and bitter with bitter chocolate, rum, raisins, roasted malts and coffee.

33cl bottle courtesy of and shared with _angst_ Batch #176.

330ml bottle, batch 176, bought at The BrewDog Bar in Glasgow. Tan-coloured head covering a deep, ruby-brown body. Rich aroma of malty sweetness and liquorice added by a touch of rum. Dried fruit and berries in flavour, lots of raisin, offset by prominent bittersweet malt-fruity notes towards the ending. Subdued rum to it, otherwise masked alcohol. Very relaxing sipper on a Friday eve (Tromsø, 20.04.2012).
