Imperial Porter using a blend of 7 different malts.

In terms of hops, we keep the IBUs modest at 35 and hopped the beer entirely with First Gold.

And of course, with Lost Abbey & BrewDog both obsessed with barrel ageing, this collaboration just had to be aged in oak.

We settled on some rum casks for the Imperial Porter, making it the first time either of the respective brewers have aged a beer in rum barrels.

Bottle. Deep brown/red liquid with small to medium off-white head. Aroma of dark fruit, port, booze, licorice, rum and raw sugar. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter with some booze and notes of raw sugar and rum. Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. All right but a bit hot.

Bottle. A clear, reddish dark brown beer topped by a finger-thick light tan head. Beef stock, some dried fruits, roasted malts, bitterness and some berry-like hints in the aroma. Dried fruits, some caramel, a little oxidation and some alcohol on the palate. Fill body, warming, and pleasantly carbonated. Lasting finish. Certainly a pleasant one, but unbalanced. 120831

Flaske 0,33l Vinmonopolet, Tromsø Langnes. Drukket hjemme 17 Aug 12. Ultradyprød. Pent svakt farget kremaktig skum som varer lenge. God søt rom-aroma. Fløyelsmyk munnfølelse. Smaken har preg av mandler. Blir etterhvert søt og holder seg vel søt. Bra men uspennende.

Bottle at home. Pours a deep clear redbrown colour with a brownish yellow medium head thats pretty sparkly, and fades fast. Very rum and sherry-like aroma at first before dried fruits, leather, wood and brown sugar sets in. Not far from a belgian dubbel. Further on I find chocolate truffles and hints of rubber and anis. The flavour is sweet and more focused on oak and leather. Some coca cola in there, and alcohol warmth in the end. Soft and slick mouth feel, and a very light bitterness. One of a kind beer that would be well enjoyed during Christmas.

33cl bottle shared by Arve_Christian - thanks! Pours deep red to dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma of dark dried fruits, chocolate, roasted malt, caramel and a hint of alcohol. Sweet and fruity with some wooden notes. Smooth and warming! (2012-08-11)

Bottle 330ml @ home
Pours dark reddish brown with a light tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, licorice, oak and leather. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light bitter with a long licorice, chocolate and oak finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

kinda lifeless, with some rum and roasted malts. Weak, unbalanced and not too impressive. Expensive too boot. Waste of money.

Medium brown head doesn’t last. Barely translucent deep dark red body. Sugary molasses aroma with notes of earthy alcohol and prunes. Aroma is fairly vague and mild. Dry-sweet-acidic toffee raisins taste with vanilla and alcohol notes. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Full-bodied. Dryish earthy compost syrup aftertaste with vanilla and rose water notes. It’s certainly unsual, and fairly drinkable, despite that rotten vegetables flavour Lost Abbey seems to love. (0.33l bottle, wine monopoly, Strømmen. Batch #176.)

Bottle from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Dark brown pour with a small fading tan head. Sweetish nose with notes of roasted malts and dark fruit. Similar themes occurred in the flavour which had some nice rum notes alongside some dark choc, vanilla, wood and fairly prominent booze. As a rum lover I enjoyed this. A worthy collaboration.
