We heap the hops into each batch of our Thunderhead IPA. A golden nectar with a striking floral aroma, Thunderhead holds a harmonious balance between its bold hop bitterness and subtle malt backbone.

Draught as a 5 oz sampler at Pyramid in Sacramento, CA, on April 23, 2011Clear deep golden color, white head. Soem hops at first, but then mainly dry bitter taste. Hints of fruits in the aftertaste. Way too bitter. Smooth mouthfeel, huge bitterness. Sweet and a bit hoppy scent.Unbalanced and not for me.

On draught@The Boom Boom Room, pre Crowes, San Francisco. Orangey gold colour with a small off white head. Some fragrant hop and citrus in the nose and flavour. Lacking in body somewhat. Drinkable enough but no depth and teetered on the precipice of mediocrity.

12 ounce bottle, opened 6/17/10. Pours a clear amber color with a medium white frothy head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of grainy malts with resiny and citrus hops. The taste is bitter leafy hops with grainy malts, toffee and a bit of nuttiness. Medium bodied.

22 oz. bottle, pours clear (for an IPA) golden with a small white head. Aroma of subtle hops, grass and citrus. Solid hops flavour with a grass backbone. Decent IPA - certainly nothing special.

12oz bottle:
Appearance: Light golden with some white head and little bit of lace.
Aroma: Citrus & grapefruit hops Taste: Hops that are on the sour side.
This isn’t really a very good IPA, kinda disappointing for a Pyramid beer.

12 oz bottle. In my back to back tastings of IPAs, this is so far the least interesting. Alaskan IPA so far has been the best for its strong hop character. Idaho’s Laughing Dog was more malty (I’m not a big malt fan) but still much more interesting than this beer. Though not a bad beer, Pyramid needs to change their recipe in order to compete with these other, much more interesting brews.

Bottle pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with a full thick clumpy white head. Lots of thick sticky lacing. Light grain malt aroma very faint hop note. Flavor is sufficiently bitter, early and late, but remarkably lacking in real hop flavor. Malt profile is rather thin as well. this is more like a pale lager, with an IBU infusion. Mild subdued flavors with a decent hop kick. A bit dissapointing.....its cold though, and refreshing after I have faced the letdown of my expectations, which for a "micro brewer" may have been a bit too high. The SN IPA coming next, should bring me back to life.
