We heap the hops into each batch of our Thunderhead IPA. A golden nectar with a striking floral aroma, Thunderhead holds a harmonious balance between its bold hop bitterness and subtle malt backbone.

Bottle. Rated 6/29/06. This one’s stamped "06/08/08." That doesn’t seem I’ve read it right, but I can definietly tell it’s a fresh bottle. Hop nose and taste is very fresh, grassy and piney with a hint of what I lovingly call "cat piss." No, that means I like its boldness. Looks a little pale, but malts are quite sweet and sticky, which would only intensify if the bottle is left to age. No doubt, a big ass kicking of northwestern alphas for us hop heads. Bottled, rated 9/22/03. My bottle, from a friend’s cellar, was date-stamped 3/99, so here’s how well it has aged: Very flowery/estery smell when opened. Pours a slightly cloudy amber body, thin head but leaves a little lacing. Taste is actually closer to a thin barley wine; maltiness overwhelming the mellowed hop profile. Holds up well if stored carefully, but I wouldn’t recommend keeping space for it if you have some Bigfoot. I opened a second, equally old bottle and got more of a big hop aroma and taste. Alcohol still very noticeable, almost like a barelywine, and more of a citrus note as well. I can’t be more critical since these are 4-year old bottles, so just take this as a cautionary on well a good beer keeps.

I have been waiting to try this one for awhile and was planning on giving it a high score, but sadly it just isn’t good. The aroma is ok with some hops and citrus, and it looks good with cloudy orange coloring. But the flavor is of very strong and very bitter hops, so strong that is ruins the taste. I hope I just got a bad bottle.

Golden body with very prominent orange highlights throughout. A fairly dense off-white head develops on the pour and lasts for quite a while atop the beer. A decent amount of hops are thrown into the dry-hop cycle for this one, as it is pretty noticeable. A small amount of malt seems to balance nicely in the aroma as well. A metallic twang is the first taste I pick up while drinking this, but then fades to just a subtle hoppiness. Some malt is used in this to balance, but it seems a bit off in the wrong direction. The hops aren't too great in the taste, and the malt isn't balanced. The aftertaste is a metallic and slightly rancid hoppy flavour with some hop bitterness. This one wasn't a beer I was really wanting to try, but since I found it for the first time, I figured I'd try it. I wasn't impressed and won't buy it again. You can find this just about everywhere, and if you are interested in the style and want to see a pretty bad representation of it...look here. As I look at the bottle it says, enjoy by: 07-09-03, which I guess by american standards evaluates to 9-july-2003. While it's after that date, I might consider throwing out this review if I taste this again and the beer has different characteristics. I bought this 12 ounce beer at Liqour Mart in Boulder, Colorado.

Not nearly as good as Samuel Smith's IPA, but not bad. I thought it could have used some more malt to balance the hops. I would like to try it on tap some day. Nice honey color and rather bubbly.
