Smoky and slightly sweet, this dark wheat beer is one for the more adventurous beer drinker. We stumbled on the combination of Freimann’s and a BLT as the perfect hangover cure one day in the brewery. Since then we have enjoyed experimenting with other food matches, and it works particularly well with cheese and pork dishes.

Bottle from St Albans Beer Shop’s stall at St Albans Farmer’s Market. Dark brown with a rapidly vanishing beige head. Far, far too fizzy. Fortunately the flavours make up for it- smoky gammon up front and then sweet banana and light chocolate. Possibly a little too sweet by the end- I’d have liked a bit more meatiness. And the annoying fizz is still there too. Overall though it’s an interesting and pleasant beer.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; dark opaque chestnut brown pour with a big frothy off white head, smoke peat aroma, taste is very smokey with some other flavours trying to get noticed but failing, the only other taste is plain chocolate, also the beer has some soapy mouthfeel. Not for me this one.

Draughy @ Euston Tap. A dunkelweizen on the sweet side with mild clove, chocolate and herbal notes. Hoppier than the germans.

330ml bottle. Pours dark brown and very frothy. Aroma is very smoky, which isn’t quite matched in flavour which is sweet and smoky. Good but not great

Bottle at The Garabaldi, Northampton, Saturday 7th June 2014 with Bob & Bill This was Bobs beer but he absolutely hated it and insisted we share it with him. It was certainly smokey but not in a pleasant way in fact it seemed a little chloriney amongst the ashey smokiness, certainly a chemically edge. Bob described it as thus...’it tastes like burnt newspaper, it’s as much fun as shitting in your hands and clapping’ Loz said.. ’it’s like burnt sasparilla or dandelion and burdock’ & finally Bill suggested ’It’s deeply unpleasant, the worst beer i’ve had this year’. So all in all not great. A4 A3 T3 P2 Ov7 1.9

33cl bottle courtesy of JMGreenUK. Thick creamy white head. Clear deep amber pour. Some smokiness. A little watery but a decent dunkel weizen
