Schieven Enthusiasm is a collaboration with our friend (and former intern) Doug Checknita of brewery Blind Enthusiam in Edmonton, Alberta, CA.
She turned out a strong version of a farmhouse ale, with no less than 10% alcohol! Aged in barrels for over a year with our Brettanomyces yeasts, her nose reminds us of saisons. We get fallen apples, a fleeting acidity, quince confit and the funkiness of the Brett yeast. In the mouth, she develops a certain softness. This comes entirely from the amount of alcohol, given that the beer holds no residual sugars at all. After this we get pineapple, acacia-flowers, red fruit on alcohol, a delicate woodiness and always those Brett flavours to enrich the whole. Her finale is soft, long and fruity, but all the while without being sugary. Her saturation is very light, which reinforces the vinous character of the beer. It’s a true beer fit for keeping, complex but nonetheless dangerously easy to drink. Beware…

Disappearing white head; hazy orangey yellow beer. Very sour nose, acetic even. Pickles, some aromatic vegetable with vinegar. Less acidic taste than expected; slight acidity, mainly fruity. Fruitflavours, with even a hint of fruitsugars. Bit of sucade. Good carbonation, bit fruitslick, not very well-bodied. Pity about the nose, beer itself quite OK.

Collab between Belgium's Senne brewery and Canada's Blind Enthusiasm, apparently a strong saison aged in wine barrels. Medium thick, egg-white, mousy and quite dense, opening head retaining as a thin ring and some flat islands in the middle; misty ochre-tinged apricot blonde robe with enthusiastic (sic) visible sparkling. Quite strong and complex aroma of fermenting apple juice, vanilla-scenting oak wood, yoghurt, quince jam, pineapple, white grapes and Zinfandel wine, yellow plums, sugar bread, pear, background Brettanomyces 'sweat', white Lambrusco, calvados, lime flesh, haystack, unripe peach. Estery onset, sweetish with a souring edge, aspects of green apple, ripe pear, lime, pineapple and white grapes, lively carbonation with refreshing minerally effects, supple and full body but not quite betraying its hefty alcohol content (at least not at this stage); rounded bready maltiness, lightly cake-like edges but equally displaying grey bread-like rye spiciness, spelt graininess and wheat sourishness, playing with ongoing colourful fruitiness and eventually dried by a tannic woodiness that matches well with a warming, calvados-like alcohol glow and pushes old wood and vanilla effects upwards. Ends warming and complex, with bright yellow fruitiness galore as well as very clear wine-like lining, grapey, tart and sweet, contrasting beautifully with the beer's estery and bready features. The wine and wood factors bind everything together and I have no doubt that in time and with proper cellaring, this one may achieve even greater hights - not that this is necessary, as it is already a great beer. Like so many of their previous offerings, another beer to align noble Belgian traditions with indeed modern craft beer enthusiasm, this is Senne at its best, I have no doubt that Blind Enthusiasm has learned a lot from them in this joint project. Fantastic beer, in my book.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Cloudy straw coulored with a minimal head. Slightly tart funky aroma, stone fruit, pear, rose hips, with a peppery finish. A bit vinous with BA notes , sweet but well balanced. Complex and still harmonious. I would never had guess that this is 10% abv. Very good.

330ml bottle. Cloudy, yellow-ish, golden colour with small to average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Yeasty fruity, slightly funky aroma, vinous and minimally oaky overtones, hints of grappa, pear, a touch of white pepper. Taste is sweet, fruity, slightly sugary and alcoholic, notes of pear, vinous BA notes with hints of oak and red wine, subtle tartness, a mineral touch. Slightly oily texture, creamy palate. Hmmm... This one is a bit elusive: somehow condensed, unspecific fruitiness, rather complex BA notes. A tad too sugary, but well balanced overall.
