Schieven Enthusiasm is a collaboration with our friend (and former intern) Doug Checknita of brewery Blind Enthusiam in Edmonton, Alberta, CA.
She turned out a strong version of a farmhouse ale, with no less than 10% alcohol! Aged in barrels for over a year with our Brettanomyces yeasts, her nose reminds us of saisons. We get fallen apples, a fleeting acidity, quince confit and the funkiness of the Brett yeast. In the mouth, she develops a certain softness. This comes entirely from the amount of alcohol, given that the beer holds no residual sugars at all. After this we get pineapple, acacia-flowers, red fruit on alcohol, a delicate woodiness and always those Brett flavours to enrich the whole. Her finale is soft, long and fruity, but all the while without being sugary. Her saturation is very light, which reinforces the vinous character of the beer. It’s a true beer fit for keeping, complex but nonetheless dangerously easy to drink. Beware…

20/IV/20 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home, BB: 8/X/21, bottled: 8/X/19 (2020-354)
Clear orange blond beer, big creamy and rather irregular off-white head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very fruity, citrus, grapefruit, some peaches, funky, lots of Orval character in this beer! Slightly oxidized, some brett notes, orange peel, lovely! MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sourish, soft acidity, very fruity, peaches, apricots, funky, soft bitterness, spicy, bit dry. Aftertaste: nice acidity, hoppy, dry, fruity, peaches, pineapple, soft bitterness, nice one!

Donkergeel bier zonder schuim. Smaak is licht fris zuur en licht bitter fruitig met iets van druif en appel. Apart bier, je merkt nauwelijks dat het zo'n hoog percentage heeft.

Bottle. Thanks to Mads K himself. Pours hazy deep orange with a small creamy lasting white head. Nose is funk and sesame seeds. Tart and dry fruity flavor with wet wood, esters and phenols. Tart and dry finish. Cool - but a little underwhelming compared to the magic that normally hits me when drinking De La Senne. Warming finish..

Sour, oaky, interesting but is it hiding big booziness? You bet it is. Some warmth at the end, but lots of fruit too. Interesting!
