In 1902, Walter Bruhn, the son of German immigrants, created a recipe for a new pilsener beer named Champagne Velvet. Over the next 50 years it grew to become one of Indiana’s most popular beers, a go-to for many of our grandparents and great-grandparents. It was “The Beer with the Million Dollar Flavor,” which wasn’t just marketing fluff; it was actually insured with a $1 million policy.

Industrial consolidation took down this regional favorite and the recipe went missing for many years until a fan rescued the hand-written recipe. Upland reformulated the recipe using that scrap of paper and proudly brings this Midwestern legend back to life. Champagne Velvet has a refreshingly light pilsener body with some sweet complexities given off by the corn malt used in this recipe, making this the perfect lager.

16 oz. can. Pours a mostly clear pale yellow color with a small white head and fair retention. No lacing. Virtually no aroma. Straightforward pale lager taste with just a hint of hops in the finish. Crisp and clean and smooth mouthfeel. Nothing special; Just a good pale lager.

16 ounce can into lager glass, no can dating. Pours crystal clear pale golden yellow color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/corn, pepper, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. A bit of fruity aromas, but not overwhelming. Nice and pleasant aromas with pale malt/corn and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/corn, pepper, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit, light nuttiness/corn, pepper, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt/corn and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors, minimal fruitiness. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.2%. Overall this is a very good pale adjunct lager. All around nice robustness and balance of pale malt/corn and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink with the moderately bitter/drying finish. Very flavorful and never watery for the ABV. Very clean and nicely rich barley/corn flavors, with an impressive amount of hop presence for the style. Not overdone on adjuncts. A very enjoyable offering, and well made style example.

Can from Bine & Vine. Pours very pale gold with a transient white head. Aroma seems rather corny. Near med body. Flavor is pale malt, slightly corny, but there's a bit of hop which keeps it from a drain pour. Maybe. Fairly dry; very mildly bitter.

Yellow pour. Light bretta but not a lot of interesting elements here. Lots of water like in front of a breaking dam. Light crisp finish. Tap at Snally.

Owl Farm can: pours pale yellow with a white head. Aroma is light and frainy with sugar. Mellow and lightly hoppy. Bready with adjuncts. About as good as the style can be.

Got drawn in by the can design aah marketing. Anyways regular gold pour puffy white head. Nose is light citrus and peppercorn. Tastes of light peppery tones, lemon, herbal, grassy hops. Decent palate. It is what it is and does fine enough with that.
