In 1902, Walter Bruhn, the son of German immigrants, created a recipe for a new pilsener beer named Champagne Velvet. Over the next 50 years it grew to become one of Indiana’s most popular beers, a go-to for many of our grandparents and great-grandparents. It was “The Beer with the Million Dollar Flavor,” which wasn’t just marketing fluff; it was actually insured with a $1 million policy.

Industrial consolidation took down this regional favorite and the recipe went missing for many years until a fan rescued the hand-written recipe. Upland reformulated the recipe using that scrap of paper and proudly brings this Midwestern legend back to life. Champagne Velvet has a refreshingly light pilsener body with some sweet complexities given off by the corn malt used in this recipe, making this the perfect lager.

Can from the guest room at Beer Under Glass. Another recreation of an old brand for which I've never had the original. Let's see. Pours a sudsy foam head over a very pale, clean yellow beer. Some bubbles still at work as I look this over. Light beer nose, though I can smell some of the alcohol made by the corn. Taste is… pretty OK. A bowling beer for sure: light malt, some corn sweetness that just edges out some German-type hops. Thin mouthfeel, but hops in the bubbles make them kind of prickly and ticklish. Wouldn't say no to another.

Can from a local bar we got to for the food. @Home. BB:101221. Guess that means it's old. Frozen head, clear, pale gold, sticky. Boring clean steel & grain nose. Taste is every so slightly malty, but straight clean after that. Twinge of metallic hops, then clean water. Super refreshing. Frothy, thin, somewhat slick. Great. Keep cold.

US Pint can in the Red Dog, Pioneertown, California on 7th January 2022. Pale yellow, clear body, fast fading white head. Slightly sweet with a corn like flavour, not unpleasant, soft mouthfeel.

FLLN. Perfect beer flavored beer for those heavily adjuncted Berliner or gose or whatever nights.

Can, from Malt & Mold (11/22/19). Pours clear pale yellow with large foamy white head, very faint malt aroma, high carbonation, mildly hopped sweet malty taste, thin body, abrupt finish. Not dry enough for a good pilsner.
