Assertive hoppy & floral west coast style IPA. Pike Space Needle Golden IPA is generously brewed with five varieties of Yakima Valley aroma and flavoring hops. We then dry hop it with whole-cone Columbus, Summit and Centennial hops, which impart a floral aroma that has catapulted this beer to one of Pike Brewing customer’s favorite IPA’s.

This beer won a blind tasting competition to be the commemorative beer for the Space Needle’s 50th anniversary in 2012. It was so well received that it has been added to Pike’s year round collection.

It was 1962 and the world came to Seattle for the World’s Fair and its futuristic symbol, the Space Needle. The beer served at the ‘62 World’s Fair? Likely nothing at all like this west coast style IPA, generously brewed with five varieties of Yakima Valley aroma and flavoring hops. We then dry hop it with whole-cone Columbus, Summit and Centennial hops, which impart a floral aroma that has catapulted this beer to one of Pike Brewing customer’s favorite IPA’s.

Peach, oats, and lemongrass on the nose. Hazy amber, medium yellow head. Hops are a bit stale, but whole orange and lemon zest are discernible. Serviceable, but not special. Probably not as fresh as it could be.

Location: Bottle at Nerd Beer Epic Weekend, 1/26/13, 2012 Bottle

Aroma: The nose is a little resiny, and it has some citrus, peach, and grapefruit
Appearance: This one pours a hazy golden-orange color with a sticky white head
Flavor: This one has a mild sweetness, but it is clearly about the hop bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium, has a sticky feel, a good amount of dryness, and a clean finish
Overall Impression:  This one is a nice, well made, West Coast-style IPA. There isn’t a ton more to say beyond that, but it is definitely a very solid example of the style.

Bottle at Chriso tasting (from the Space Needle gift shop, Seattle - be warned it was $2 cheaper downtown, not to my surprise but I didn’t want to risk not getting hold of one!) 18/11/12. Hazed light amber with a thin off white head that soon clears to the edge. Nose is caramel malts, rip mango, orange, grapefruit and a touch of wood. Tastes comprises caramel malts, pine, bitter tropical fruits, light tea bag flavour. Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a bitter finish.

Bottle at Chriso tasting, London. Pours hazy gold with a creamy, white head. Nose of dry pine and toasty bread. Medium sweet flavor with more dried pine, dried leaves - it’s pretty dry in general. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Dry finish, lightly astringent with pine, grass and faint orange rind. So so.

Bottle from QFC - Seattle (Ballard)
Hazy amber color. Nice aroma, the hop provides a delicate fruity side. Strong body, it has a good caramel flavor, and strong hops, mainly resiny and piney; long final.
Powerful but easily drinkable.
