Goodwood uses casks from some brandy distilling friends to patiently age our Honey Ale – super freaking patiently, actually. Brandy Barrel Honey Ale is brewed with locally sourced honey and aged several times longer than our other barreled beers. But you don’t have to wait another second. Go ahead. Skip the part about “notes of malt, mead and dried fruit,” and get to sippin’!

On tap at Goodwood, pours a hazy dark amber with a small beige head. Nose brings out subtle honey with even subtle bourbon. Flavour is soft, with fermented out honey, and subtle bourbon that makes itself more apparent with each sip. Subtle but elegant. Very nice stuff.

Deepish, hazy amber and copper coloured body with a two centimetre tall off-white head on top. Aroma of brandy, scotch, peat, alcohol, tequila and a dose of earthy malts with a hint of honey and unfinished sugars as well. Medium-bodied; Assertive malt flavours at first with peat and caramel noticeable that immediately switch to the brandy/bourbon/tequila right afterwards, but also showing a touch of a sour/vinegar and acidic flavour near the end. Aftertaste shows a ton of alcohol, sugars and pungency from the barrel aging with some off flavours from that bourbon, the malt and the honey right afterwards. Overall, a decent beer at best - way too much alcohol and pungency to be taken seriously, given that there is no malt backbone around, there is no complexity and no real depth - just a golden ale with a bunch of alcohol and some pungent flavours. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Crystal City Wine Shop (20th Street Location) in Arlington, Virginia on 22-February-2017 for US$3,49 sampled at home in Washington on 29-August-2017.

Bottle: Hazy brown with a moderate tan head. Honey, orange.....a little booze in the aroma. Taste is tart caramel malt, slightly nutty, honey, brandy. Oddly sour mixed with an almost sugary sweetness. A little rough.
