St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is Quebec’s tribute to the late 1700’s English Imperial Stouts, brewed for the Russian courts of Catherine the Great.
Made from a blend of barley malts, St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout is infused with Cascade, Goldings and Willamette hops, resulting in an outstanding hop-character with a smooth finish. Bourbon wood-aged, this full-bodied ale has a rich, smoky aroma with hints of vanilla, expresso and chocolate.
Serve St-Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout between 13°C and 15°C, preferably in a port glass or a brandy snifter. This stout will improve with age for a number of years. Store in a cool, dark place.

Bottle - 2011 Vintage - Bourbon, chocolate, licorice, molasses and a complexity that could have me describing this for a while. Jet black with a huge creamy brown head. Sweet vanilla bourbon, chocolate, coffee, licorice and roasted malts. A wonderful rich mouth feel to go along with the robust flavor. It is sad that this beer doesn’t have a bigger distribution as I think it is a gem for Canada that doesn’t have enough recognition.

2011 vintage courtesy of JulienHuxley. Thanks! Pours a rich dark brown color with a medium dark brown creamy head. Good head retention. Aroma of chocolate, roast, citrus hops, a faint bit of smoke. The taste is roasted malts, bitter chocolate, nuts, bitter hops, faintly sweet finish. Medium bodied. Booze less than expected for the ABV. Quite nice.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, soy sauce, alcohol, and wood. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, alcohol, soy sauce, and chocolate, leading to a dry and roasted finish.

Bottle 34,1 cl. Pours pitch black with a dense, light brown head with good retention, leaving some lacework. Sweet vanillaish aroma, the some subtle roast and last comes the oak. Rich body, quite some solid roast, a little tar and ashes - very rustic - before the Bourbon kicks in. But it remains a dry and solid beer, no cloying Bourbon mess. Malty bitter finish. 260713

Pitch, 100% opaque, completely black black with no head - that is insane body. Aroma of roasted malt, anise, licorice, pit fruits, metal and a hint of oak. Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavour with a noticeable amount of hops, vanilla, oak, bourboun, raisins, toffee and a lot of licorice noticeable. Aftertaste shows a good complexity wiht a lot of sugars at first followed by a lot of malt and complex spices. Finished by a very viscous body and a spicey finish with tons of flavour. Overall, a very nice imperial stout aged on oak with a smooth side, but the complexity reigns here - a great beer and definitely should be sampled if you can find it! Beer #2 of my 4000rating extravaganza (of 9 total). I sampled this 12 ounce bottle purchased from Au Coin Duluth in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 04-Decmeber-2010 for CA$7.99 sampled at home in Washington when Detroit won Game 7 of the 1st round in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs over Anaheim on 12-May-2013.

Bottle - 2011, thanks Sebastien! Pours inky opaque black with a small dark brown creamy head that slowly dissipates with great lacing. Aroma is dark roasted malt, light bourbon, dark chocolate, wood, vanilla, coffee. Flavor is the same, smoky and rich with light sweetness, medium bitterness, some woody astringence. Full bodied and tongue coating. It is obvious this stout has been in wood, but the bourbon notes are pretty restrained. Pretty darned tasty.
