An Irish Thoroughbred

The New World Guide to Beer listed this as one of the best Irish style ales on the planet. We’re happy to agree. And we’ll also tell you that while watching the mist roll across an Irish lake is an excellent way to enjoy McNally’s Extra, it’s also perfectly at home, right here in Canada.

Little Known Fact

Those three stars you see on the label aren’t just some fanciful design element. Early in its life, McNally’s Extra was awarded the highest award of one of Europe’s highest brewing authorities. Three golden stars.

Bottle, sampled at Viti, pours dark amber. Aroma and flavours of light toffee, caramel malt and a slight fruity sweetness. Decent amber.

tap at Big Rock in Seoul - Pours copper with a thin head. It smells and tastes of sweet caramel malt and some light hops. There’s a light to medium body and while uncomplicated, it’s decent.

Red amber colour with a nice off-white ead. Slightly oxidized, but malty aroma and vinous notes. Light sweetness with berry qualities (strawberry), fruity, slight diacetyl, very good body and mouth feel for this beer.

The decent malt nose promises more then it delivers in the taste, which is smooth and mellow.

A little bit overrated these days. I find the malt flavours to be more simplistic than they used to be, and butteriness could be toned down a bit.
