An Irish Thoroughbred
The New World Guide to Beer listed this as one of the best Irish style ales on the planet. We’re happy to agree. And we’ll also tell you that while watching the mist roll across an Irish lake is an excellent way to enjoy McNally’s Extra, it’s also perfectly at home, right here in Canada.
Little Known Fact
Those three stars you see on the label aren’t just some fanciful design element. Early in its life, McNally’s Extra was awarded the highest award of one of Europe’s highest brewing authorities. Three golden stars.

Great beer, the way the red style should be made. Low bitterness, great round body. Yeast driven esters dominate. Sk co-op

Light rust and some caramel. Decent body and good malt. Creamy consistency like hot butter. Amber pour with decent head and lacing. Bottle in Banff.

330ml bottle. Pours a clear, red amber with a small, short lived, fully dissipating, off-white head. Sweet aroma of caramel malt with a hint of dark fruit. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, dark fruit and a hint of nuts with a dry, bitter, hoppy finish. Medium body with a creamy, smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. 7% ABV is well hidden. One of their better offerings.

Rather a "meh" appearance with modest head and bright copper body. Soft hops aroma with a hint of malt. Flavour is modestly hoppy with a hint of citrus ad rice. Just okay. first rating in many months!

Bottle at The Greedy Pig, Vancouver
Hazy amber color with small head. Sweet malt aroma with a toffee touch. Round mouthfeel, sweet malt flavor with some toffee, cereals and cookies; delicate fruity touch; correct bitterness.
Simplistic but pleasant hybrid.

Bottle. Coppery with a thin white head. Caramelly nose. Malty flavour with butter, perhaps a little too much for my taste. Bitterness is found in the finish

Bottle, brought back from Canada by Jim - thanks! Pours clear reddish amber with a small white head and effectively no lacing. Aroma is light caramel and a floral note. Flavor is caramel, nuts, a bit of metal, and a light bitter finish. Boring.

Purchased at The Beer Store in a Big Rock Brewmaster’s Selection 12-pack (with the Traditional Ale, IPA and Grasshopper - 3 bottles of each). Pours a dark amber colour with an off-white head, average retention and not much lace. Grainy malt aromas with nice sweet butter, nuts, toffee which all makes me think of beer nuts. Medium-bodied and kind of silky, but a bit dry in the finish. A little warming from the alcohol, with flavours of roasted malts, butterscotch, caramel and the hop showing in the aftertaste, reminding me of apples. The first sips did nothing for me, but this one does get better and better as it breathes (BTW, it was room temperature to begin with, so that has not changed since the beginning). Probably Big Rock’s best brew.

Draft @ Korea Location: Poured a amber with off white head. Aroma is corny and grain. Taste is rusty nails along with caramel malt.
