The beer is an 11.5% Imperial Brown Ale which we have aged in amazing Spanish sweet red barrels from Malaga. Stewart Bowman, our Head Brewer, devised an Imperial Brown Ale designed to perfectly complement the wine flavours and extract maximum depth and character from the giant barrels. We also felt the Imperial Brown Ale was ideally suited to be barrel aged and as well as the infusion of the Malaga wine character will also benefit added complexity and maturity from the time in oak.

Bottle from brewdog.com. Dark cola brown color with small beige head. Aroma of dark malt, raisins, dark berries, syrup, ash, wood. Taste, dark malt, syrup, caramel, dates, hints of chocolate and coffee, wood, vinous notes. Long bitter finish. Alcohol is dangerously hidden. Nice, complex beer.

Bottle shared with ClubGonzo. The colour is deep reddish brown, and with a small compact light beige head. I find cognaq in the aroma along with leather, alcohol, Dry Martini, sweet cherries and marzipan, oak and coffee. The party continues in mouth with leather, oak, salt licorice, sweet nuts, chocolate truffles, port and liquor. Rich and sticky mouthfeel, and a light bitterness. A complex and explosive ale in both aroma and taste.

Appearance: Black color with a huge creamy tan head. Nice lacing.
Aroma: Dark malt, fruity and vinous.
Palate: Medium to full body. Moderate sweet and low bitterness. Creamy carbonation.
Taste: Well balanced smooth dark malt. Fruity and not as sweet as I expected. Oak and light vinous. Unbelievable well hidden alcohol.
Overall impression: Nice evening sipper I the cold arctic weather.

375mL bottle, enjoyed about six months old, pours a deep dark amber / mahogany with a small tan head. Aroma brings out the sweet barrels upfront, with notes of berries, candied toffee, caramel and sort of a port wine character. Flavour is very silky smooth, full of treacle toffee, sweet barrels, caramel and a subtle port wine character. Viscous and silky smooth on the palate, with very soft carbonation which is perfectly fitting for the type of beer this is. Sweet, but never cloying and drinks rather easily for being 11.5%. Excellent stuff - definitely one of the better beers in the Abstrakt series.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Almost clear mahogany colour, small head. Cardboardy caramel aroma. Sweet with full body and sticky mouthfeel. Papery with some rubber and loads of caramel. A potent mess.

1/3 pint from tap @BrewDog Manchester Hazy dark brown body, with tiny layer on top. Dried fruit, prune, cherry and some bitterness. Velvety. Great and interessting experience, but it’s a tad too sweet, so 1/3 pint was more than enough. (7.Jul.2012).
