An American style IPA fermented with a Belgian yeast. The hops used add a fresh grassy character the gives way to soft floral notes. The natural Belgian yeast phenolics create unique clove aromatics with a slightly pungent undertone. Rounds off with a dry finish and a solid white grapefruit bitterness.

Bottle from the brewery. Cloudy light orangey yellow with a small white head that leaves fine lace. Big grassy nose with some citrus and pepper. Medium sweet malty start with an excellent bitter citrus middle and end and the Belgian yeast providing a lightly spicy character that enhances rather than distracting. Medium slick mouth with soft carbonation and a dry finish. Excellent.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is hugely enchanting, with both loads of hops and Belgian yeast -- bringing out loads of piney hops, some tangy citrus notes, Belgian yeast, and floral notes. Flavour is along the same lines, with loads of piney and floral hops, some citrus, and a wonderful Belgian yeasty note that creates a nice tang on the finish. Exceedingly well-structured and immensely drinkable. Belgian IPAs are a tricky style to get right, but Bellwoods totally nailed this. Wonderful.

Bottle: Poured a deep orangey color ale with a huge foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of citrus and bitter hops with subtle fruity notes. Taste is also dominated by bitter hoppy notes with some citrus notes with light fruity undertones with a lightly sweet malt backbone. Body is somewhat full with good carbonation. Enjoyable but the Belgian yeast didn’t come out a much as I was expecting.

(500ml bottle from the brewery) Pours a quite hazy pale orange with a big bubbly white head that leaves a ring and a lot of lace. Aroma pungent/dank/earthy hops, orange and tree fruit from hops/yeast, slight pepper, Belgian yeast character, malt sweetness. On the palate, sweetness from pale and crystal malt plus fruit from yeast/hops at first, tangerine and tree fruit, plus grassy/dank hops. Malt sweetness fades pretty promptly, leaving a fruity core, and that dank herbal hop character leads to a dry, somewhat peppery finish with a bit of Belgian yeast but not much. It’s moderately bitter for an IPA. Mouthfeel is medium-full, carb moderate but lively and fine. The parallels to Cat Lady are unsurprising given the Summit/Simcoe core to this beer as well, but the slightly sweet fruity yeast character differentiates this from its sister beer. Both are great IPAs, and it’s a fine time to be doing bottle runs to Bellwoods...
