Bottle. Deep brown body. Creamy tan head. Aroma of peat, toffee, raisins, dark fruits. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. The finish is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Taste of char, smoke with a light acidity in the finish. A bit medicinal.

Pours black with a slowly fading head.Nose shows chocolate, bready malt, peat, soft smoke, coffee, roasted malt, oatmeal and nutty nots.Similar flavours but quite sweet. Peat, brady malt, chocolate, malted grains, nutty notes. A bit too sweet.Carbonation could be higher.

Can. Clear dark brown with a modest beige head that nevev quite disappears. Aroma of toffee, toast, prunes, mild spices, a whiff of smoke. Taste is sweet with dried and stewed fruits, toffee, pepper, burnt toast. No real depth in the malty flavours, which at 7%+ makes me wonder. A bit astringent as well as peppery at the end.

Bottle from SED. Clear dark brown with a thin head. Aroma is dark fruit malt, roast caramel. Flavour is toasted almost smoked, malt, caramel and grape. Finish is dry smoked.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with light tan head. Nose/taste of charred earth and burnt barley. Some hints of chocolate covered cherry and smoke. I couldn’t get past the char. Medium body.

Dark brown color. Very light malty, light smokey, cherries and earth, but lacking the body. Rounded. Nice, but not tons of complexity.

Tap. Pours clear dark brown with a small tan head that laces well. Aroma is roasted malt, distinctive peaty scotch ale, taste is lightly sweet roasted malt, notes of chocolate and strong peat. Fairly full bodied in the mouth - an enjoyable beer

Bottle (no bottling date visible). Pours with a near black body with a large and lasting off-white head. Aromas are roasty, very sweet, overripe fruits, VERY estery, raisins, dark fruits, a bit smokey (even phenolic), tobacco, vegital and a hint of acetaldehyde. Messy yeast wise if not a touch infected. Flavors are dry, smokey (strong), leather, chlorophenolic, medicinal, caramel, pear esters. Lively carbonation, oddly dry, medium bodied. Mild infection starting.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe in Davis, CA. Pours really dark brown with a creamy/bubbly 3 finger tan head. Aroma seems like a strong mix of toffee and chocolate. Med body. Mild carb. Flavor is somewhat Horlicks - chocolate and malt. Not on the sweet side, but not exactly dry. It has some bitterness - low key. Finally finding a bit of hop in the nose. Might be some smoke, but hard to be sure.

This is a very good scotch ale. I’m trying not to be too swayed by the relatively low price ($4-5/bomber), but it certainly doesn’t hurt. The beer is a deep, ruby-highlighted brown with a small, fizzy beige head. The aroma is mostly nutty caramel and malted molasses. It has an almost floral honey tone. This is all classic and good scotch ale territory. It’s big and full with a touch of sweet wood smoke. No off-notes, no nonsense. This beer is a mouthful of caramel malt. It tastes fresh and earthy. The sweetness never overwhelms even without any apparent hoppiness. There’s just a touch of lightly bitter wood at the close. Smooth, full, creamy, rich. Drinks above its weight class.
