Draught at Lord Hobo, 9/27/15.
Paul (scopey) shared this one with me and after having a sip, I handed it back to him and said "Wow, that’s not bad!" to which he quickly replied, "Well, not really."
I didnt actually mean the beer wasn’t bad (obviously, being a Stone beer, it’s pretty bad) but was just surprised that it was nowhere near as bad as I was expecting, so I just blurted out "wow thats not bad" in my extreme shock. Yes, it’s heavily over-barreled with a huge dominance of both grape and wood to the point where you aren’t even sure what the base beer that you’re drinking is. BUT, the flavors, had they just been toned down, were actually enjoyable, with no grainy/harsh tannin, no harsh alcohol or overly phenolic wine character. Carbonation was ample and yet not too high, with an actual body to it and some chewy texture (obviously the woodiness helping there). So yeah, it’s "Not that bad"....for Stone, who should fire all of their management and executives and start over again from scratch.

On tap at bier thirty. Pours out a burnt orange color topped with a small head. Nose is heavy oak wine grapes citrus tons of different fruit going on here some sweetness and hops. Taste is more of the wine barrel forward to be along with a little bitterness plenty of fun tropical fruit to make this a very interesting beer.

Draft at Snallygaster 2014. Poured a golden color with a foamy white head. Aroma is mostly barrel notes, red wine, with some light , but incredibly good - with a light hoppy aroma with pine, grapefruit, floral characters. Woody. Enjoyed this one.

Pours cloudy orange with ok head and lacing. Too much barrel destroyed a good beer. What’s the point of doing this to an IPA? Good beer is gone. Some light citrus with the wine. Tap at Snallygaster.

6 oz draft pour at Snallygaster 2014 shared by me. Golden brown with off-white head. Aromas of citrus, floral notes, wine. Tastes of red wine, citrus, floral notes, spice. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Better without the barrel aging.
