As years passed and our oak aged beer became more robust, we discovered many unique, interesting, single barrels deserving of a special release. Barn Owl was created as a response to these lone wolves, and has grown into a diverse, ongoing series that reflects the growing diversity of our barrel program. The name is a nod to the wise and exacting animal that keeps watch over the farmhouse (er..industrial warehouse), and the one-off creations are released sporadically throughout the year, just as soon as we deem the barrels ripe for the picking.
Inspired by the 2017 vintage of Motley Cru -- Barn Owl No. 18 began as a blend of a brett inoculated pale ale from one of our new foeders and a sour golden ale from one of our more sour-forward OG foeders before conditioning on passionfruit purée. The result is highly drinkable with huge tropical fruit flavours and aromas, notes of preserved lemon, pineapple and a hint of earthy funk.

(500ml bottle c/o Herbalist, thanks!) Pours lightly hazed bright gold with a small white head. Aroma of fresh passionfruit on the tart zippy floral side, sweet lemon, pineapple, touch of white wine, lactic undertones, some rather subtle oak and Brett dry dustiness. Flavour is quite high acidity like fresh passionfruit and Meyer lemon, bit of sour pit fruit, quite vinous with just a hint of vinegar but mostly fruit/lactic acid bite, slight honey sweet balance, light to moderate oak, Brett is pretty restrained. Finish is moderate tart, drying, passionfruit and lemon curd lingering, a bit mineral but very long aftertase, kind of quenching actually. Medium body, soft filling carbonation. Natural passionfruit here that makes the acidity quite pleasant, not as complex as Motley Cru 17 but very enjoyable all the same.

Draught, taster. @Mash Beer Festival 2019, Barcelona (Spain). 25/10/2019. Pours a dark golden to orange colour with a medium white head. Good retention. Aroma is intense passion fruit, yeast and oak barrels. Taste is also intense oaky and passion fruit leading to an intense tangy and dry finish. Next one please!

Pretty nice beer here. Lots of passion fruit, with a big dose of what tastes kind of like white wine. Pours golden orange with good head. Tangy end. Lots of grapefruit bretta as well. Nice stuff from my boys. Tap at Churchkey.

Bottle at Farmhouse Fest 2019, pours a hazy blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out passionfruit, and sulphuric notes. Flavour is messed up, with rubber, subdued passionfruit, and sulphuric notes. There is something wrong here. Very sulphuric.

A hazed golden ale with a thin lacing white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with loads of peach, orange, berries, light dank notes, pleasant and pungent. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with loads of tropical fruits, peaches, plums, passion fruit, very nice and complex. On tap at brewery.
