Bourbon barrel aged imperial stout on coffee beans. Café del Bastardo is the culmination of our friendship with Tamp Coffee Co. and our love of Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout. An infusion of whole coffee beans into our Kentucky Bastard barrels brings a new member to the Bastard family. This intensely aromatic beer displays bright coffee, bourbon, vanilla and malty chocolate-coffee notes followed by warming alcohol. Enjoy fresh for the fullest expression of the coffee’s subtlety, or cellar and mellow for years to come.

Black, fast fading brown head.Sweet, roasty boozy nose and palate… the heavy wood overshadows all else and ruins this for me

I got this via a trade and apparently it was one of the top Canadian beers of 2018. Nickel Brook Cafe del Bastardo 14.5% BBA Imperial Stout on Coffee Beans Pitch black with a rusty fizzy head of foam that didn’t linger. The aroma is savory sweet coffee. Medium bodied with a somewhat velvety texture. The taste is toasty sweet coffee, some bourbon and oak. All in all a really smooth beer. Paired with a coffee crisp the sweetness was cut accentuating the booze and robust fruity coffee notes.

Bottle from the LCBO. 2019 vintage. Pitch black under a large frothy dark brown head that fades fairly quickly to a sheet and leaves tight lace. Nose is coffee, bourbon, oak, dark chocolate, vanilla, molasses, some berries and dark fruit. Flavour is Light+sweet molasses with a medium- coffee and dark chocolate bitterness and the slightest fruit tartness. Mouth is full and creamy with soft carbonation and and warming finish. Alcohol is evident but not over the top. Yesterday's tasting was Founder's KBS. The two compare favourably where this is more coffee forward and the KBS leans more towards the bourbon focus. 9/5-/9/4/18

500 ml bottle. 2019 vintage. Pours Black with short tan head. Aromas of acidic black coffee, oak, alcohol, dark sugar and sharp roasted malts. Flavors follow same with dark chocolate and a very strong licorice element. Very good but off balance. Nowhere close to the Kentucky Bastard IMHO. And way over priced... Minus a point.

Bottle. A- Mocha, subtle booze. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Brownie batter, fudge, coffee, slightly sweet, mild bitterness, subtle oak. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- When I bought this I couldn't believe I was spending $20+ on a 16 oz bottle. Because of this price, I didn't pick up the other 2 variations. Little did I know it would be this good. I've never had a beer this big that was this smooth. At 12% and drinks like it's 4% yet doesn't taste thin at all. A balance of sweetness and richness. This is damn close to a perfect RIS. Could drink this all day long. Barrel aging adds flavor complexity rather than booziness.
