Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will.
Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast. 9.3% alcohol by volume.
Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.
**Update** In 2023 Jester King has brought back the original "Farmhouse is Dead, Black Is Back"

Bottle. Black and opague. Coffee, cream and licorice in the aroma. Ash. Milk chocolate. Full bodied. Sweet, ashy alcoholic flavor with coffee, chocolate, licorice and dried fruits. Alcoholic, but still well balanced and tasty.

0.75l bottle shared with The Tasting Crew. Looks lovely with a huge really lingering and near creamy deep chocolate brown head that leaving good lacings. Smells of dark wood, bitter cocoa powder, some chocolate, mild cold coffee, lots of roasted malts and traces of mild sour dark dried fruits. It smells quite nice. Lots of flavor at first and in the end. It's definitely roasted this! Dark near charred black flavors. It has a mild oily, somewhat light feeling in the mouth and it's gentle in the carbonation. Bitter dried chocolate, green wood, some slightly acidic wood burning wood tones. Yeah, it's warming the back of the throat pretty well. Lots of flavor, but I think I prefer the other version. 21.05.2014

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice thick brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of black chocolate with light sweet notes is quite nice. Taste is also a great mix of creamy black chocolate notes with some residual sugar and hints of roasted malt. Body has a nice creamy texture with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Nice smooth easy drinking stout. I am surprised at how well the bottle has aged over the years.

Vintage bottle from the Johnny Off License catacombs in Rome-Italy. Many thanks to John Nolan for this amazing sharing. Pours black color with a minimal but persistent dark foam. Nose is terrific with nutty feel well balanced with roasted coffee beans and some mocha. Mouth is velvety, silky and elegant. Easy beer for the style which aged in a fantastic way. A real gem, I want it again!

Vintage bottle @Johnny’s Off License (Rome), thank you John! Pours oily black with a little cappuccino head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, light coffee, nuts. Flavour is medium to heavy sweet with a light bitter end, a bit unbalanced but in a good way. Full body, light carbonation. A great beer.
