Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will.
Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast. 9.3% alcohol by volume.
Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.
**Update** In 2023 Jester King has brought back the original "Farmhouse is Dead, Black Is Back"

Bottle. (From notes.) Bottle. Opaque black body with a big tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roast, sour cherry, light licorice. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Dry, sweet, boozy finish with a slight tartness. Taste of roasted malt, wood, alcohol.

Bottle split at home with JF, acquired in an IP from some Texan dude, 16/01/15. Pitch black with an oh so dirty tan head head - this beer is a looker! Nose is chocolate, rich maltings, raisens, chocolate fudge, dark toffee. Taste comprises more chocolate fudge, charr, dark fruits, black pepper, soy sauce, light spice. Full bodied, fine carbonation, lightly warming alcohol in the close but kept well in check for a 10% beast. Solid impy, great looker, great balance, has aged well, very drinkable.

Bottle. The taste seems undeveloped wich leads to a perfumed feeling. Heavy roasted. Too carbonated.

From a bottle. Aroma is full of dark chocolate, light toast, light leather and tobacco and moderate fruit esters. Fruit is raisin, prune and fig with a faint plum note. Really nicely balanced aroma. Faint soy sauce oxidation. Pours black with a fairly thick mocha head that shoes good retention but does steadily recede leaving a thin film on top and along the edges. No lading but fairly long legs. Flavor is similar to aroma, but perhaps a bit more fruity and the alcohol is more noticeable. Moderate roast character with supporting leather and tobacco notes. Lighter amounts of dark chocolate. Moderate raisin, prune and fig. A hint of earthy, woodsy hops and moderate bitterness. Moderate alcohol heat in the finish. Some dark chocolate in the finish along with a bit of an ashy character. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium high carbonation. Low to medium low astringency, likely from all the dark malt, and medium alcohol warmth. Overall an alright beer, with the aroma being better than the flavor. The flavor is just too ashy with a bit too much astringency. The carbonation is a bit high as well.

Bottled. More or less pitch black colour with a beigeish brown head. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts, ashes, some ripe dark fruits as well as mild liquorice. Flavour is very dark chocolate, some coffee, mild nuttiness as well as some ashes, ripe fruits, alcohol and some hints of liquorice. Smooth to drink and although big, not all too thick.
