Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will.

Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast. 9.3% alcohol by volume.

Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

**Update** In 2023 Jester King has brought back the original "Farmhouse is Dead, Black Is Back"

Bottle, 75cl. A black one, topped by a big, dark tan head. Roasted aroma with chocolate, molasses and some boozy notes. A little vegetal hint too. Lightly farmhousish flavor with roasted malts, chocolated and some molasses. Full body, soft carbonation. Quite bitter in the finish. A nice imperial stout, yet it lacks quite a bit to be world class, but I’m struggling a bit to pinpoint what. 120914

Opaque black beer. Massive dark tan head, persistent. Palate is semi dry and pretty well carbonated, perhaps overly so. Dark chocolate with sour wet wood. Whisper of emulsion paint. Pinch of spice. Dry finish with more dark chocolate. Not bad but I like by Impys a little sweeter.

DC tasting. Roasty fuesal burning aroma. A lot of coffee tones for a beer without coffee. A bad-ass, world class IS. Lots of depth, burnt specialty malt. The hops and dark malts really create some nice toffee tones. I love this beer.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating (likely bottled in late 2011). Pours dense pitch black color with a nice 1 finger dense dark tan head with nice retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, light char, toast, molasses, earth, herbal, light anise, and light dark fruitiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark roasted notes. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, light char, toast, toffee, molasses, earth, raisin, smoke, light anise, and herbal. Light roasted coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, cocoa, char, toast, raisin, molasses, smoke, and earth on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity and balance of roasted flavors with light fruitiness; and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and full bodied; with a very creamy and slick mouthfeel that is fantastic. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic imperial stout! Awesome robust roasted flavor balance and complexity; and extremely smooth to sip on. An extremely enjoyable offering.

75cl bottle sample @ RBBWG 2013, courtesy of Tderoeck.

Thx. to tderoeck / Tim for this one. 75 cl. bottle sampled @ RBBWG 2013. As Klaas lovely said, produced before Jester King started having issues with infections :) This one is never coming back if I am not mistaken, the original plan was to have everything farmhouse, they made non-farmhouse beers during their first year in order to get enough funds going. All the non-farmhouse beers are retired now. Pours black with a mocha head. Smell is sweet mocha, dark sugar, chocolate, creamy choc. Taste is sweet chocolate, sweet mocha, sweet creamy, toffee, caramel, light roast, molasses, bitter chocolate, light licorice, minor touch of booze. Creamy – very, very good and way better than the Farmhouse version in my opinion. #15 Jester King

Kaffe, kakao, litt vanilje. Go get it!

Shared bottle at local tasting. Pitch black beer with a moderate tan head. Roasty and malty aroma and flavour, with notes of strong coffee, liquorice and dark bitter chocolate. Rich and full mouthfeel, warming, maybe a bit too much carbonation. Medium bitterness in the finish. All in all mighty impressive.
