Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will.
Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast. 9.3% alcohol by volume.
Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.
**Update** In 2023 Jester King has brought back the original "Farmhouse is Dead, Black Is Back"

Bottle. Black with a small, thick tan head. The aroma was unexpectedly soft. Licorice, roasted malt and some wood. The same in the taste, also coffee and something that reminded a bit of "medicine". Descent.

Acquired in a trade. Enjoyed at 60 Degrees F in a Bordeaux glass from Riedel.
A - Pours a midnight black / pitch black appearance out of the bottle but doesn’t have the viscosity I expected. Minor 1 finger coffee colour head that faded slowly to a fine brown ring of carbonation on the edges. Really nice lacing and some alcohol legs.
S - Big mocha bomb with hints of vanilla, figs and raisins.
T - Decent maltiness but not very pronounced. Hint of milk creaminess that is overshadowed by coffee, espresso beans, dark chocolate, baker’s chocolate and golding or saaz hops. A very nice bitterness but not too pronounced. Mouth swish reveals apricots and figs.
M - Heavy body, medium carbonation.
O - Maybe this beer is past its prime or maybe it’s just a weak taste profile overall. Still very drinkable.

21/07 RBESG Grand Tasting, 0.75 l bottle. It poured pitch black body with a smaller brownish head. Nice pungent aroma of roasted malt like coffee, chicory, chocolate, also quite alcoholic. Very nice coffee profile in the flavor, extends to dark chocolate, toffee, some licorice, peat, without any hops to possibly disrupt its smooth, full body. Long, only slightly warming finish, sweetish chocolate. Plus one to overall as of the name and design, but anyhow, it’s a very nice and tasty imperial stout!

The bottle opens with a huge crack but luckily the beer was well behaved and I didn’t wear any of it. Pours a thick inky black with a huge mocha head that persists long after it should. Smells of roast, milk and dark chocolate right off the bat. The aroma is sweet with caramel and darker malts with hints of earthy hops and licorice. The flavor is very sweet with caramel and lots of milk chocolate. There’s a fruity tartness in the middle somewhere as well as some brown sugar and earthy hops. Thick body with an asinine level of carbonation and a sweet thick syrupy mouthfeel. This is a very nice stout it’s very flavorful and aside from the carbonation I really enjoyed it.

Bottle @ RBESG Grand Tasting 2012, courtesy of TheAlum. Thanks Adam! Black appearance with a brown head. Roasty, black licorice, dark chocolate, woody, mild vanilla aroma. Burnt, roasty, dark chocolate malty, mild boozy/vodka, light espresso somewhat burnt flavor. Nice taste but a bit boozy and spirit-like.

Bottle, RBESG 2012 grand tasting. Colour as black as it can get. Aroma peat, ash, sweetish, bourbon. Taste medium bitter, medium sweet, chocolate, a bit off coffee, roasted, wood, light tart. Complex and wonderful. Given the ABV it is highly drinkable. Long bitter finish. Another highlight of the evening, I need more of this!

Poured a pitch black body with a light brown head. Coffee, alcohol and dark chocolate in the aroma. Sticky cocoa taste, sweet, but mostly a blast of coffee ending in dust. Very light figs. Another very good beer!
