Bottle. Pours black with whitish head. Nose of barley, chocolate, lager malt, licorice and light smoke. Taste of smoked barley, chocolate, lager malt and grain. Lightish body.

This schwartz poured a deep black colour with a big, frothy, tan coloured head. To the nose there are scents of earth, molassass, caramel and roasted malt. First taste was smooth but a little watery on the mouthfeel. Flavours of roasted malt, coffee, cocoa and leather. Finish is roasty/malty with a bit of smoke.

Bottle from Oak Tree. Would love to be doing this in the Old Ale House! Pours black with a foamy tan head. Light dark malt aroma, perhaps with a hint of chocolate. Med body/frizzy carb. Flavor is sweet dark malt, maybe a hint of chocolate, and there’s enough bitter to keep it bearable. Ok. But not the world’s best schwarzbier. My past impression is that this brewery isn’t overly generous with ingredients. Note: The bottle says Latrobe, but that brewery isn’t overly generous either.

Draft. Black body with some ruby highlights. Beige head, mostly diminishing. The aroma is ashy with notes of dark roast, caramel and a hint of tar. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. The texture of this beer was smooth, but the ashiness and slightly burnt roast in the flavor was too harsh. They easily eclipsed any hop flavor.

Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is a nice roasted malt with some coffee in there. Flavor is a little weaker with the roast but still there to make things interesting. Good but not great.

12 ounce bottle from Market Street Wine Shop Downtown Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark ruby red color with a medium tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of leathery roasted malts, green apple and a hint of smoke. The taste is chocolate, green apple, faintly roasted malts. Medium bodied. Decent.

Draft: Rank smell of buttery diacetyl. Dark brown, thin yellow head, some lace. Buttery and sour flavor, charcoal finds its way through in the finish. Dunkels, to me, seem to be more suceptible to infection than other styles. This sample is definitely no exception. Bad keg, bad beer.

A very nice appearance. Smell is somewhat like slag. Taste is very friendly for a dark beer, even more well behaved than your typical schwartz. Decent carbonation, not flat at all. Actually is more like a dark lager. Has some of that roasty background in there. Finish has good manners for a lager lover. Overall decent beer experience. Not as good as xingu or kuso cerne, but very good.

Bottled: Pours a very dark brown with a tan head that dissipates very quickly. Aroma has nutty and roasted malt smells about it. Taste has chocolate notes and a little bit of coffee flavor from the roasted malts. Mouthfeel isn’t as thick as a stout of course, but it is still enough for you to feel your beer. Not the greatest, but good enough to session with.
