Uh-oh, looks like we did it again. This big mother of a beer clocks in at 22% ABV and is nothing short of a flavor explosion. Special Kay is an unholy collab between Struise and Portsmouth Brewing company, well known for making one of the best stouts in the United States.
We first blended Portsmouth's Kate the Great imperial stout with our Black Albert. We then fractionally ice-distilled it over 20 days and ended up at a temperature of -15°C. The result is a white-knuckle thrill ride for your tastebuds: bitter, sweet and super intense. It was only made once, so get your hands on a bottle while you still might have a chance!

Rating # 650 – draft – sampled twice +/- 20 cl. & 1 smaller sample @ Kertbierfestival 2011: A: oily pitch/ utter darkness black with a chocolate mousse head, conflicting with the taste and mouthfeel this is indeed as liquid as any other RIS & not sludge syrup – S: wow, I would rather not stick my nose into this, when colder pure alcohol, disinfecting alcohol plain & simple, vodka,… when warmed up hint of chocolate, thick roasted malts, ice coffee as thick as a milkshake but the booze overwhelms everything – T: thick, very thick, thick syrup, super concentrated malt syrup, bucket of molasses squeezed into this, concentrated brown sugar, ice coffee & condensed coffee, sludgy, a roast which tries not to drown in the syrup & sweetly goodness, strong porto (calvados?) aftertaste, warming but not really alcoholic – B: syrupy sludge – delicious, I need more of this but don’t think that is going to happen /// Tried this one gain on draft @ brewery, seems like these should be drank fresh on draft. Still good but no longer spectacular, I hear that the bottles are drinking phenomenally now. Keeping the old score.

Draft at 17th Kerstbierfest at Essen, rated in English. Syrrupy stuff, as black as Urbain’s soul. ;-) variegated brown head with great retention. Aroma of chocolate covered biscuits, licorice, vanilla, burnt espresso. Taste is straightforward alcohol and coffee. Boozy compared to other dark twists from Struise.

several draft snifters @ Kerstbierfestival ’11, Essen. Liquid lunch and dinner with the darkest of pitch blackness motoroil in a beer.

Very dark brown to black beer, big creamy solid brown head, stable and adhesive. Aroma: dark caramel, mocha, very little alcohol, wood, dried fruits. MF: ok carbon, full body, thick and creamy texture, alcohol warming the throat. Taste: caramel, mocha, some herbal hops, sweet sugar, little sour. Aftertaste: mocha, coffee, alcohol, bit of vinegar, maybe balsamic, pepper. Pretty impressive stuff. Once in a lifetime. Took me about 35 minutes to finish the 15cl sample.
