Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all – it must taste rare!

Tap at Craft. Dark, dark brown. Small golden head. Aroma is smoke, meat, some sweetness, initially. Further down gets a bit more interesting. Unsurprisingly boozy. Lots of roast too. Taste is bacon at the beginning and right at the end. Lots of booze. Sweet and smoky. Maybe feels a bit too strong to get the subtleties. Very nice still. Less meaty further down. I think i should try this again. It was nice, but reading the other ratings I maybe expected a bit more. Rerate: maybe got a bit more the second time, but still not blown away. Taste gives a bit more, maybe a touch of fudge, but still booze dominates.

Can pour into shaker pint glass from Total Wine & More, Brentwood, MO--average of tasting 7/1/19 and 11/24/19. Appearance is opaque, inky black with light sparkle at the edges of the glass, finger-width light brown head with decent retention and no lacing. Aroma is fudge, roasted malts, hint of dark fruit and alcohol (harsh, isopropyl-like but mellows as it warms). Taste is fudge with alcohol (more astringent when younger), milder roasted malts, earth, hint of dark fruits. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth, frothy texture, lightly astringent alcohol warmth (stronger when younger, bordering on burn), soft-to-average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, as is, this continues to be a bit of a disappointment (though better in November than it was in July--though probably still young). If reading upc correctly, looks only aged 7 months. November revisitation is an improvement and will look to age even longer to see if this gets to the rarefied air everyone else experiences it. 3.5 when young, 3.7 4 months later.

Keg at the Port Street Beer House, Manchester. Black... very black... with an ominous ring of brown head. Caramel and fudge in the aroma with notes of coffee and slate. Measured sweetness in the initial taste, with a salty astringent note combining with bitter earthy hop to create a complex overall flavour. Salt liquorice, Japanese salt plum and smoked meat alongside bitter cooking chocolate and yeast extract in the aftertaste. Wow.

Bottle. Three year old. Pours a dark brown to black colour with a small beige head. Aroma of rubber, licorice, coffee and dark chocolate. Flavour of dark chocolate, licorice, roasted coffee, leather and pine. Has a soft mouth feel, full-bodied and a light bitterness. A little careful of aroma but a powerful flavour. Solid imperial stout.
