Few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all – it must taste rare!

On keg at Brewdog Lothian Rd. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely crema head. Nose - booze and dark chocolate. Dried fruit. Light smoke. Taste - prunes, dark chocolate and sweet liquorice. Palate - full bodied and creamy. The light touch of smoke dries the finish nicely. Overall - very good.

Pitch black coloured body with a very oily glow with a large-ish three centimetre tall super rich deep brown head on top and that jet black opaque glow throughout. Aroma of roasted malt, anise, rich roasted malt, oatmeal, grain, figs, pitted fruits and heavy hit of lactose. Full-bodied; Super strong roasted malt and oatmeal flavours throughout with a big dash of anise, nuts, figs, prunes and grain with the oatmeal, pure lactose and sugars and heavy spices at the tail end. Aftertaste shows vanilla, bourbon, oak, alcohol, but also a ton of sugars with the lactose and prune notes the strongest. Overall, a very nice Imperial Stout, despite me not wanting to like it, with a good range of flavours, but also showing some good restraint and subdued qualities - until you get to the punch of the alcohol, which is quite noticeable. This probably would do even better for ~10 years aging, and if I find it again (I'm sure I will) I'll buy it and keep it around. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 04-July-2017 for US$4,99 sampled at home in Washington after finishing the USMC Marathon on 28-October-2018 for the eighth time.

Pint can from Good Spirits Co. Very dark brown with a big, foamy, greyish(!) brown head. La is treacle, raisins and alcohol. Flavour is complex, roasted malt, dried fruit, leather, treacle and a wonderful spicy warming finish. Beautiful thick, sticky mouth feel, excellent stuff

Pours like an oil change on a tank with a light brown rocky head staying on a jet black still body. Massive aroma of berries, licorice, coffee, demerara & sweet malt. Full bodied, super smooth on the palate with a cheeky tingly back. Dark chocolate, malt, roasted, nuts & brown sugar tastes with a bitter citrussy finish

17/VIII/18 - 1Pt. can @ Kantien (Gent) - BB: n/a (2018-1002) Thanks to C'kes for sharing the can!

Clear dark brown to black beer, creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: bit sweetish, lots of coffee, caramel, banana peel, malty. MF: soft carbon, full body. Taste: pretty sweet start, lots of chocolate, some vanilla, alcohol, soft roast, hoppy bitterness. Aftertaste: sugary, coffee notes, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, alcohol, more chocolate, much better than the Pecan Pie version which we had next to it.

Pour is a thick motor oil looking black with a large tan head. Aroma is a nice full bitter bakers chocolate with a little roast and coffee. Flavor is a full roast with some dark chocolate and chewy roasted malt with a little alcohol creeping in there. A full flavored Impy stout and half the fun of this beer is pouring the thick black sludge out of the can.
