Draft at brewpub awhile back. Pours black with tan head. Nose/taste of roasted chocolate and black malts, flaked barley, oats and light coffee. Creamy mouth feel. Medium body.

Tap at Canal Street location. Nitro. Served in a 16 oz. English pint glass. Standard roast, chocolate, and coffee nose. Average aromaโ€™s. Flavor was a bit better than I expected. Much better roasted malt then the nose would lead you to believe. Coffee and a bit of oats can be detected. Mildly sweet finish. The only downfall is a thin body. If they produced more body and creaminess to this stout it could be a homerun. Still a tad above average.

tap at Canal St. location - Pours very dark brown with a roast malt aroma that has a hint of coffee. The flavor is of roast malt, coffee with the dark roast taking on an almost smoky character. Itโ€™s good.

From tap at Canal Street. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is mild roasted malty. Light sweet caramelish flavoured, light bitterness to it. Smooth mouthfeel, light dark malt and caramelish into a light sweet finish.

Sample at Beer Works Fenway: This beer is a very dark brown color (almost black) but not completely opaque. Medium thin light tan head that dissipates slowly and rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Medium body with a coffee and chocolate character. Light hops and malt are present too. The finish is roasty with a coffee finish that is ultimately short-lived. Another slightly above average offering from Beer Works.

On tap at the Fenway location, 5/9/2005. Dark black color, small, creamy white head, low retention. Aroma of black malt, oily roast, quite a good deal of lactic notes and some caramel. Flavor is oddly quite burnt, yet also incorporates the lactic quality. Oats give it a smooth mouthfeel, but there is a strange burnt rubber and chalkiness that donโ€™t go well together. Dark, burnt hazelnuts, soured cream and a bit of sweet malt. Body was medium, with no real wateriness, but the flavor is just off.
