5AM Red Ale is 5 malts, 5 hops and 5% abv. But that’s where the order ends.

Jump in and you’ll find berry bouncing off marmalade clashing with caramel cosying up to chocolate buzzing off spice sizzling with toast laced with lychee and colliding with biscuit.

As malty as it is hoppy. As anarchic as it is structured. Bitterness and sweetness, all neatly messed up in a triumph of pure chaos.

Perfect, baffling symmetry. Go fathom 5AM.

Malts: Maris Otter, Caramalt, Munich Malt, Crystal and Dark Crystal Malts
Hops: Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo
Dry Hops: Simcoe, Cascade, Centennial, Ahtanum, Nelson Sauvin

Bottle from Masuyo. Pours a clear amber with a small off-white head. Nose is pine resin, caramel and some grapefruit. Taste is more of the same. A woody bitterness on the palate with some bready malt sweetness to balance it out. Bitter finish with some grapefruit showing.

Pours dark amber. Aroma is mostly honey, with a hint of dandelion. Taste is watery and bittersweet. Finish isn’t long.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 10B). Bottle 33 cl - Batch 166. AROMA: moderate hop aromas of a floral and piny nature, balanced with a sweet and caramelized malt background. APPEARANCE: reddish color with orange highlights and very clear. thin beige head with below average retention. TASTE: slight sweet flavour with floral and piny notes. medium-low bitterness with a semi-sweet finish. PALATE: medium-low body with average carbonation. OVERALL: a very enjoyable amber ale.

Ruby copper colored, small off white head. Aroma is the best part, strong in the way of the hops; citrus, passionfruit, floral aroma. Taste is sweet malt, low toffee, citrus, fruit and flowery hoppiness. Medium but lingering bitterness. Light bodied and refreshing.
