5AM Red Ale is 5 malts, 5 hops and 5% abv. But that’s where the order ends.

Jump in and you’ll find berry bouncing off marmalade clashing with caramel cosying up to chocolate buzzing off spice sizzling with toast laced with lychee and colliding with biscuit.

As malty as it is hoppy. As anarchic as it is structured. Bitterness and sweetness, all neatly messed up in a triumph of pure chaos.

Perfect, baffling symmetry. Go fathom 5AM.

Malts: Maris Otter, Caramalt, Munich Malt, Crystal and Dark Crystal Malts
Hops: Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo
Dry Hops: Simcoe, Cascade, Centennial, Ahtanum, Nelson Sauvin

2016 catch up - Bottles at home from borthday present case - A nice beer that was pleasant to sip. Very smooth with both malt and hops coming through nicely. The mouthfeel was the key to this and I have to say the malt was very well done for Brewdog who tend to be hop obsessed.

Pours (gushed!) murky, dirty red from the bottle with frothy off-white crown. Aroma is caramel, mashed up red currant. Taste is sweet with a caramel base, and a tart red berry undertone. Noticeable cherry. Finishes dry, tart, very lightly bitter. Medium bodied. Interesting, but the flavors don’t quite work for me.

Sandy coloured fluffy head stayed on a light mahogany, finely carbonated body. Sweet malty aroma. Pings on the palate. Medium body. Smoother and softer on the back. To the fore it’s sweet malt, caramel, berries and this is followed by a floral tanginess & hints of citrus on the back.

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a rustic dark red color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dies off at a decent pace. Moderate lacing.
The aroma had some caramel/toffee malts up front with a touch of grassy to resinous bitter hoppiness. Touch of earthiness. Subtle chocolate.
The flavor yields to the sweetness initially through the malts. Resin bitterness touches gracefully in the background. Slightly crisp malty to bitter hoppy aftertaste. Quick malty finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Moderate crisp carbonation feels it’s way out over my tongue. ABV feels appropriate.
Overall, nicely done amber ale that I would have again.

Bottle at home. A flavourful beer which would accompany red meat perfectly. A wine like character.

330 ml bottle. Dark amber colour with a creamy, off white head. Toffee aroma, caramel, strawberry and tropical fruit flavour. Long a favourite, can’t believe I hadn’t rated this before
