Inspired by London’s Industrial Revolution when Smog filled the air and the Porter was the beer of the people. An original home brew recipe using 9 different malts including a good chunk of smoked ‘Rauchmaltz’ from Bamberg, Germany. Big flavour hits of molasses, raisins and caramel are cut with the resinous US hop Chinook. Smokey aromas fly, reminiscent of the smoke stacks of industrial London.

Black beer with a frothy, off-white head. Aroma of malt with, as I find with many smoked beers, a bacon-y quality. Taste is mostly bitter malt. There’s some coffee in there too and, for my taste, I’m quite glad that the smokiness is somewhat subdued rather than a big, dominant flavour. There’s actually a bit of sweetness in the aftertaste as well. I’m not always a big fan of smoked beers but I rather like this one.

Can (from beer gonzo). Pours black with light brownish head. The head stays. Aroma is roast, oats, malt. Flavor is sweet and bitter, roast, some cigar smoke, malt, vanilla, and coffee. Finish is roast bitter with slight acidity. Overall: nice sweet porter, but not really smokey.

Can. Very decent beech smoke both in aroma and flavour. Carefuly balanced with chocolatey, cocoa, roasted dark malt flavours and aromas. Full bodied, yet easy drinking at its relatively modest ABV. Full of flavours to savour. Excellent.

Can from Beers’n’more. Some bacon-y smoke, but really mostly a chocolate porter. Sweet, bitter, but not burnt. Carbonation makes this beer quite light without killing the aromas. Nice!

Can. Dark brown, nearly black color with beige head. Aroma is smoked malts, roasted malts, ash, black bread crust, a hint of the typical wet dog breath. Taste is smoked and roasted malts, black bread crust, smoked ham, an idea of some sweetness fainting through. Low carbonation, slightly watery mouthfeel which is a bit oily. Slightly alcoholic finish, unexpected for this ABV. It’s good, but not great.

(Can, 0.33 l - BB 14/10/16, from Viking Gabriella Duty Free, 20160407) The beer poured clear and quite close to black. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had burnt malts and ash. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, dark chocolate, coffee, creaminess, sweetness and bitterness. Aftetaste was burnt, sweet and bitter. A nice solid porter. The aroma was too burnt.

Keg @ Doghouse. Thick, dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is smoke, coffee and a little plum. Tastes much smokier than it looks, with hints of dark chocolate and more coffee. Good
