From bottle to snifter. Pours near black with a deep brown head that slowly fades and leaves minimal patterns down the glass. Aroma of slight cocoa, roasted malt and brewer's pitch. Taste is odd - a pit of the ash and tar, and in the back half there is a distinct sourness to this beer. I would have thought that it was a flaw, but the description references the sour. Mouthfeel covers nicely and leaves a dense, chewy residual throughout. An odd duck.

2/1/2021. Bottle from Cobbett's Real Ales, Dorking. Pours black with a bubbly tan coloured head. Aroma of liquorice, roasted malt, bitter dark chocolate, black treacle, burnt toffee, dark fruits, deep roasted coffee. Moderate sweetness, medium to heavy roasted bitterness. Full bodied, slick texture, soft carbonation. Heavy roasted finish.

Adding in my 300 Beers To Try ticks because I want to see how they impact my stats and some of them I will never see again. Will however re-rate them when practical. Bottle at The Royal Oak, Borough. This was one of the first, if not the first, Impy Stouts I'd had. Was taken aback.

Bottle from Harveys Brewery Shop. Pours a pitch black colour with a medium sized creamy beige head. Aroma is fairly winey, some liquorice and faint roasty notes. Taste again has some winey notes, more liquorice, much more roasty coffee, molasses, little hints of dry dark fruits, cherries, rich chocolate and a big bitterness on the finish. Full bodied with a thick oily mouthfeel . Rich and bitter finish. Nice but too rich for me to want more than one at a time.

13/X/19 - 33cl bottle from The Royal Oak (Borough, London), shared @ home, BB: II/2021 - (2019-1735)

Clear dark brown to black beer, big thick irregular brown head, pretty stable, bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: oh boy, this is gonna be good! Nice chocolate roast, bit sourish impression, red currants, dark cherries, bit dusty, malty, grains, some tobacco. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bit oxidized, bit sourish, lots of tobacco, fruity, coffee, bit sweet, dusty, little bitter, nice roast. Aftertaste: bitter, good roast, bit oxidized, sourish touch, pretty spicy, some cardamom, bit of cloves.

2000 vintage. This beer punches harder than its 9% might suggest. Almost black color. Plums, chocolate and cherry in the aroma. No head at all, hardly any lacing. Thick, oily and syrupy. Sweet flavor with roasted malt, licorice, raisin, raspberry, porto and alcohol. Very complex beer, delicious and surprisingly fruity, without any doubt a classic.
