Black with no head. Aroma is complex with notes of liquerice, burnt malt, overripe fruits, alcohol and wood. Flavor is rather vinious with strong alcohol note along with liquerice, wood and burned malt. Finishes dry and bitter.

Vintage 2001; drank Jan 2008. Just the thinest of head on this black as black beer. Unique aroma. Roasted malts, biscuity, molasses, dark fruits, berries, wood; intense. Body is nice, but a little thinner than I was expecting. Powerful flavor. Roasted malts, coffee, molasses, dark fruit, berries, and cocoa. Finish is bitter, slightly sweet, and a long lasting. Truly an amazing brew.

Bottle conditioned; 2001 vintage; corked. Aroma is suggestive of burnt malt/rubber/organic something. Brown/black color with no head. Medium to full bodied with essentially no carbonation. Like a Gales ale. Flavor is dark toast; vinous; coffee; wood; espresso. Malt seems balanced with light sour. It’s complicated. Finish is about the same. Very smooth. A good sipper.

Bottle: Extremely dark-amber coloured with a quite stable, but small brownish foamy layer, quite complex nose: vinous fruits, liquorice, roasted malt, leather and bittering hops; full bodied, dry salty(!) bitter flavour; long lasting, warming finish with traces of roasted malt, leather, tobacco and hops. Complex, maybe a bit too complex.........

(33cl bottle, vintage 2001) Coal-black colour without a head. Slightly acidic Sherry-like nose with Flor-yeast character and a plum-fruity shine. Bitter, slightly acidic flavour, quite full bodied with a very soft to none carbonation. Dry and bitter, roasty, somewhat mouldy taste; if it was a wine I´d have guessed it has a cork failure; nevertheless a more than interesting and intriguing taste; dry and bitter, slightly vinous finish with notes of dark chocolate and coffee. Tastes pretty old fashioned and almost authentic to the style, but it is obviously not an everyday-, nor a session-drink.

Bottled. Dark brown colour with small brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, sweet sugary notes, raisins and some fruity hops. Flavour is acidic and sour coffee along with some roasted malts and caramel. Not too exciting, but still a pleasant impy stout.

Bottle, 2001 vintage. It pours a black, at least almost black, body looking clear, and without any head, except for a few bubbles disappearing quickly. Quite oily pour. Sourish, slightly vinegary aroma, almost cherry-like, with oak, cellar, roasted and burnt malt. Oxidized. Sweet, some soy-sauce and salt, with some caramel. Coffee and roasted malt too. And of course, there’s oxidation. No carbonation at all, full-bodied and oily, with a long sourish stout-finish. It’s a lovely beer in a special way, I guess it’s a beer you either love or hate (yes, I know there’s lots of ratings at the middle of the scale) and it sure takes some time to finish. One hour for a small bottle would probably be quite fast. Rating: 8-5-8-4-17-4.2.

Bottle, 2001 vintage, at Københavnske Øldage. Black, with some brown bubbles on top. Smoked, port-like aroma, with tar and some dried figs, raisins and fruits. Tar, smokenotes, bitterness, coffee, port and some chocolate and hops. Full body, drying coffee-bitter finish. Wonderful. (070512)

Bottle picked this up from Beers of Europe late April. Mmmhh maybe I shoulda’ had this for the 1000th, what an incredible beer. This beer poured like a slightly watered down treacle with only a small tan head, the aroma was quite strange that I can only describe as being a bit fishlike. As a child I always loved the smell of creosote and always wondered what it would be ike to lick it off the fence, how strange then at 38 I finally get to try a beer that on first taste made me think I was sucking a creosoted fence panel, guess what? It tasted great, the neighbours better watch out for a strange man with splinters in on black tongue, creeping around their fencing panels. The second taste released bitter chocolate that morphed into a creamy chocolate finish, such an intense and complicated flavour the roof of my mouth now feeling that it was coated with a layer of pitch. Another sip revealed a sour tang with chocolate and roasted flavours. I took 45mins to an hour to drink this it just demanded to be savoured, such an amazing beer that shouldn’t really work and yet it does, it’s fantastic, great accompnement to Craig Charles funk and soul show on Radio 6 on a Saturday night.
