Yet another in the line of perfect-appearance-beers from Heavyweight. Big and lasting chocolate-beige head tops a dark brown-black body with some maroon highlights. Lacing is strong.
Unfortunately it’s, "yet another in the line of very-buttery-but-otherwise-good-beers from Heavyweight". Arg! How annoying is their bottling line? This one seems to have a wonderful maltiness, smooth, slightly chocolatey and with some chocolate liqueur-like dryness and light earthiness for balance. Cakey with vanilla and mild fruit esters, it, nonetheless, is dominated by diacetyl.
The flavor seems a bit underattenuated in its sweetness, with lots of sticky caramel and chocolate, but still enough raisin and flakey roast to keep it mostly manageable. The carbonation, very tight, helps mitigate this somewhat and a light cherry and honey flavor is noted on the finish. Some breadiness (dry roast) and a bit of sweet vanillin collect on the palate as well, but it’s eventually all drowned out by butter. Would be a pretty nice beer were it not for all of the diacetyl....

Thanks to kp? for bringing this one to share at the pre Cask Ale tasting. This retired Heavyweight pours a dark clear brown with a thin head. Toasty malt aroma. Some diacetyl and a touch of tartness are perhaps signs that this is getting past it’s prime, but it is still a very smooth and drinkable beer at this point, though perhaps the flavor changes that occurred with the sample I had have shifted this away from what I look for in a good representative of the Schwarzbier style.

750 bottle. Pours brown but comes out almost black. very dark but cannot see through it. Smell is present - Smacks (the cereal) with a fishy/oyster-like aroma in the background. Taste has a good roasty-chocolate aspect. A bit watery.

On tap at Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn. Dark chestnut brown; roasty, toasty notes in the aroma. Creamy body. Coffeeish and long, with a depth of malt flavours.

The last wort runnings of the Perkuno’s Hammer produces something that tastes strikingly like a watered-down version of it - quite chocolatey and roasty, with medium body at first, but everything falls apart in the finish - it becomes thin and watery, and a bitterness comes in that balances with the sweet chocolate flavors and first, but then totally overpowers everything - this doesn’t warrant its special, otop status.
