Draught at the Merchant, 2/9/16.
Dark black, cocoa body shows low clarity and a light beige head that fades to cover but is retained there.
Can definitely smell the ghost pepper from the nose, which isn’t surprising, and it begins to outdo the fruity, rather citric hops with warming. Dark chocolate, light caramel and bits of vanilla break through as well. Bit of plastery-like character, not sure where it’s coming from and not altogether unenjoyable. No alcohol noted in the nose.
Nicely attenuated in the mouth, with a somewhat "hard" specialty malt texture and lots of cocoa and vanilla. Ghost peppers build up immediately but don’t really destroy the palate or anything. That being said, it becomes much less an IPA and much more a pepper beer. Lightly sticky malt at times lends chocolate-caramel and light touches of vanilla. Fruity hops sit in the background and lots of pepper heat plays about, helping to dry out the palate.
