Bottle at the Delirium Cafe, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a hazy medium amber with a mostly lasting frothy white head. The aroma is malt, Bretty, red berry fruits. The flavour is light sour with a light crisp, malt, dry yeasty, light tart fruit palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Original Rating Bottle from ABC Beers. Gushed absolutely everywhere! I’m not well pleased. Poured a hazy medium amber with a huge frothy white head. The aroma is dry, light brett, citrus hop. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a big hoppy bitter, yeast, citrus palate and a bubbly mouthfeel. Medium bodied with lively carbonation and a lingering bitter finish. Not bad, but I only got to drink half the bottle!

Rated this several years ago but found an older bottle now and since this is intended as an Orval tribute, I wonder if it has the same ageing potential. Very thick, towering, rocky, ’papery’ lacing, egg-white, extremely stable head over a clear, deep and warm amberish orange blonde beer. Yeasty and very ’rural’ but pleasant aroma of soap, sourdough, wet hay, unripe plum, redcurrant, wet leather, the proverbial ’horseblanket’ but not too pronounced, earth, white pepper, dried apricot, raspberry bushes and nettles, green banana, jute. Crisp, restrainedly but still very estery fruity onset, dried berries, unripe stone fruit, green banana, more sourish than sweetish but not actually sour, with lively yet well-positioned, spritzy carbonation; supple, smooth caramelly and bitterly toasted malt body with the esters and phenolic spice effects continuing but in a restrained kind of way, dry and earthy, bitter finish, peppery hops with retronasal floral and hayish qualities along with leathery and ’funky’ Brett notes; long trail of earthy, spicy and wormwood-like bitterness in the throat. These guys know what they are doing and this one is right on the money: it shares the same ’wild’ Brettanomyces effects and earthy, dry, resinous hop bitterness with Orval, or even Orval in the ’old’ days, considering it has been mellowed down a bit in recent years. Orval enjoys a cult status in and outside Belgium and this is completely justifiable, but this status also spawns ’clones’, ’epigones’ or even parodies every now and then, creating a kind of small subfamily of Belgian Orval-inspired ales - this one, along with Herberg’s Cuvée Devillé, Karikatuur and a few others, is a very decent attempt at doing just that. Body is lighter than the real thing and it does not quite develop the same complexity after a few years of cellaring, but by itself, this is a very pleasant substitute for Orval. The only problem I have with this tiny Belgian ale ’subfamily’ is that it is beyond me why they are trying to imitate Orval other than simply boasting their technical abilities and proving they are simply capable to do so... If you have actual Orval at hand, there is no reason whatsoever to grab this one, I’m afraid. Nevertheless: well done, certainly from a mere technical point of view.

Bottle @ home. I expected a black beer, but it’s actually amber with a fairly chunky and large white head. Smells slightly leathery, horseblanket, some malts, brett. Tastes malty, sweetish, some brett, quite fresh. It’s a decent beer that I’ll probably never drink again. Medium body, active carbo but not bothering me.

33cl Bottle from Prik&Tik Pauwels. As SchuppenAas. Slightly hazy orange-amber colour, white head. Aroma of a bit of Brettanomyces, yeast, citrus, light floral, almost salty. Flavour is citrus, light Brett character, light salty and yeasty, light floral, firm bitter finish. Light-bodied. Hard to describe, but nice.
