Draught at EBF and again at Earth Eagle, 3/6/16.
Pitch black pour with a rapidly fleeting tan head.
Bitter chocolate and kitchen-sink-like herbs in the nose come off with a lot of anise, some treacle, a touch of cardamon and very light honey-like maltiness behind it. Barrel aging is light with no overt bourbon tones in the nose, though I’m sure the spiciness and wood are easily consumed by the herbs. No alcohol, no flaws.
In the mouth it’s bitter anise, light cocoa, vanilla, cardamom and I guess the light pennyroyal notes. Some mint as it progresses and a sticky, treacle-like chewiness in texture, with tight carbonation, good attenuation and very light honey-like sweetness attempting to balance. Bitter as all hell, but if you like gruits, this is a nice one, albeit a sipper. Barrel aging is light and difficult to pinpoint, but obviously serves foremost to mellow the beer.
