750 ml bottle, sent by FB for review. But take this review with a grain of salt because, full disclosure, Forbidden Root mailed this to me. Initial pour in a small snifter showed a deep black body, with a respectable half-finger of foam at the top. That foam went away quickly and subsequent pouring could not kick it up again. The nose might have been the weak part, because I didn?t get anything I could have expected. A bit of solventy alcohol and a sort of bitterness that comes, I guess, more from the pecans than any hoppiness. But there is that cocoa on the palate. Not a sweetened chocolate bar taste, more the dregs of a cup of hot cocoa made on the stove. But again, its considerably more mellow than that. In other words, one of those "Complex" beers. Magnolia and pecan add more dimension. Maybe a kind of bitterness like with almonds? I do get the occasional impression of licorice, but not constantly. Because I certainly can?t call this one "nutty." Perhaps the magnolia is adding a bit of perfume and sweetness. Either way, I suggest if you get one, to enjoy it fresh.
