This deep mahogany red strong ale is a classic example of a winter warmer that’s high in alcohol and rich in taste. An excellent balance of malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness, gives aromas of Christmas cake with hints of black treacle and vine fruits.

Dark amber, olmost black with off white head -- sweet caramel and roasted malt, along with some hop bitterness - very good beer

500 ml bottle, $3.29 at Binny’s. The oval flask-shaped bottle is no more, at least in America. Strong, sweet smell with dates and currents in the pour. Color is opaque brown, lighter than a porter, with a foamy tan head. First thing I notice about the taste is its thin mouthfeel and low carbonation. I presume if this had been poured warmer, it might come across like a cask ale. Taste is nice, but I’m missing that sweetness and fruit that I first smelled. Some yeast in suspension. A bit of coffee note comes up as I pass the middle of the bottle. So while the taste was kind of a letdown after the promising first smell, this beer does pack some surprises.

Good dark-beige head, over black beer with brown lining. Sweet-spicy malts’ nose; bready and leafy. Smells like a top-fermented Dunkler Bock. Bitter, liquorice, underlying restsweetness, ending a bit metallic. There’s a certain saltiness there, lending it a reminiscence of zoute drop with all the liquorice. Medium bodied at best, bit slick. Too much liquorice flavour. Might be significantly better with less.

Big beigeish brown head doesn’t last. Barely translucent dark red body. Fruity burnt roasty chocolatey aroma with toffeeish wooden notes. Dry-sweetish roasty salty licorice taste with chocolatey hoppy notes. Full-bodied. Dry, sooty burnt chocolatey aftertaste with toffee notes. Sooty burnt taste lingers. Nice, sippable, complex, interesting. (0.5l bottle, Systembolaget, Charlottenberg.)

[bottle] Clear, ruby coloured hue with a thick beige foamy head. Sweet and slightly toasted malty aroma with notes of plums, vanilla, combined with an aromatic hoppy tail. Chewy malty body with notes of caramel and subtle fruity flavours. Lingering bitter-sweet and slightly toasted malty finish with delicately fruity and woody hoppy notes and a spicy aftertaste. Not very complex but a pleasantly warming Ale [07.I.09]
