Our Raison D'Etre, with a little extra. This immodest brew, made with an obscene amount of malt, brown sugar and raisins, takes Belgian-style browns to new heights.

Raison D'Extra's little brother Raison D'Etre was brewed to be the ultimate beer partner for steak. Plump raisins and beet sugars give the beer a similar DNA and color to red wine.

D'Extra takes this concept to the next level. What 120 Minute IPA is to 60 Minute IPA, D'Extra is the D'Etre. We're pushing the limits of what a Belgian yeast can do (and we've discovered that's somewhere in the ballpark of 15% to 18% ABV!)

D'Extra is extremely complex and a great candidate for aging. Sip on one with a loved one now, and stash a few in your beer cellar! As Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione says, "This puppy's only getting better with age."

Boozy cereal nose. Kibble liqueur, anyone? Cloudy ochre with chunks of "stuff", no head. Sweet date and raisin flavor, rather cloying. Cereal finish. Alcohol present, but downstated, given its actual content. Well done for what it purports to be, I suppose. It isn’t agreeable in the least to me, however. It isn’t beery enough, which I can accept if it had more character. I’d rather have the Raison d’Etre. FWIW, it will totally ef you up, if you enjoy that sort of thing. Re-rated a 2004 bottle in 2011 Still very boozy, with the same flavors, but now soy sauce gives it a new dimension of complexity.

12 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark amber with a small off white head that quickly diminishes to nothing. The aroma is a stong spicy malt and alcohol with grain. Thin mouthfeel with a strong malt and caramel with a very overpowering alcohol with a alcohol burn in the finish. Hard to drink with the alcohol very present but still a good brew.

Bottle at the Bloomington Beer Festival. Poured a heavy, cloudy brown that was murky. The head was light brown. Aroma was full of malty and grainy notes with an undertone of raisins. Alcohol was clearly present as well. Flavor had strong malty and grainy notes with a strong alcoholic burn. A bit overwhelming for my taste.

(Bottle, 0.355 l, at Pikkulintu, Helsinki, on 2009-03-27 -- shared with isos, thanks!) Reddish and hazy. Lots of raisin and malts in aroma. Full bodied, warming an dry palate with little bit of carbonation. Malts, wood and raisin in aftertaste.

355ml bottle from Ölbutikken. Dark brown orange with a yellow head. Smells like a barley wine with raisins and soy. Tastes of oak, wine, burbon and some alcohol.

12oz bottle. Been looking forward to/dreading this bad boy for awhile. Ruby brown-red color, opaque. No head. Hardcore raisin and cognac aroma. Reminiscent of a Quad in some ways, the raisins work well to smooth it out. Somehow doesn’t finish harshly, fairly remarkable. The aroma really seems harsh to me, makes me wonder how this would be fresh. Syrupy and thick, this is above par for the huge ABV, but I still find it a little odd and harsh.

750mL bottle shared by Indra at his Strong Ale tasting, dated Dec 19, 2002, so 6 years old. It pours a dark copper/brown color. Aroma is dark raisin, brown sugar, and apparent alcohol. Comes off as a sweet alcohol brownie. Taste is so much alcohol and comes off as sherry. I did not get any age though, seems like it could still sit for years.

12 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy orange color with a medium head. Low head retention and lacing. Very malty aroma dominated by raisins and brown sugar along with citrus and some other fruits. Taste is raisins, brown sugar, molasses. Full bodied and quite warm from the alcohol.

Bottle that I picked up from a beer store in NYC in Nov 08. Pours murky dark reddy brown if there was a head then it soon buggered off. Wonderfully sticky and sweet, big fat plumptious Ma Larkin sized raisins sit on my tongue. I am sat at home drinking this in front of a roaring open fire, its bloody marvellous. Needs to be treated with respect, I sat for over an hour cradling my one. A7 A4 F8 P5 OV16 4.0
