Dark Sour Ale

Changeling is an enchanting blend of dark sour ales aged in whiskey and wine barrels that were inoculated with Brettanomyces and lactobacillus. It pours a deep ruby color with touches of gold at the edges of the glass. Leading with plum and toasty malt, the flavor transmutes into a soft tartness, with notes of earthy, funky Brett and a touch of lingering caramel to create a delicate balance.

Bottle. A- Cherry, wood, funk, mild smoke. A- Dark red color, dark liquid, light brown head. T- Funk, balsamic vinegar, acidic, tangy. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, tart finish. O- Not bad but perhaps a bit past the best by date. For an $8 bomber I can't complain. Decent enough but not too complex.

Well stored bottle. Clear dark amber body with a big, dense beige head. Aroma has malt, toffee, wood, funk and nice acidity. Taste is medium acidic, malt, caramel, dry fruit, red berries, wood, chocolate and hint of vinegar. Fine body and long lasting aftertaste. Complex and tasty.

Big bottle for thanksgiving, turned out only as an OK pairing for turkey. Still looking for that ideal match. Anyways, it was balsamic sour and mostly one dimensional in that. Maybe a hint of wine, like a tannic red, very tannic. Semi-dry. Def in the Flanders red vein. Not much really obv brett funk, it was mostly aceto type hard sour. Nice to sip but hard to finish a 750, but I managed to do it, gave me diarrhea. Reddish brown, low carb, virtually no head.

I got this at my homebrew club's white elephant beer exchange. That is good b/c I am kind of over buying 750s from Blvd. It is just too much beer for too much money that isn't good often enough. While I always wanted to drink this Changling, I just never was willing to buy the bottle. This worked out perfectly, I even shared it at the party. It tastes spot on, a malty sour beer. Natural acetic cherry sourness among a wet leaves sourness. 7.3 is a bit stronger that I would like for this type of beer.
