Bourbon Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout

Pitch black in color with a faint tan head that immediately identifies this beer as BIG. Aromas of dark fruits, chocolate, caramel and roast also make it even bigger. Roasted coffee and fruity chocolate notes are just the beginning of this stout's complex flavor. If this is wrong we don't want to be right.

Bottle shared at RBBWG 2023. Opaque black color, small light brown colored head. Aroma and flavor are malts, brown malts. Flavor in the aftertaste is better: more vanilla and bourbon. Okay.

Sampled 2023. Pours black, no real head. Scent is soy, beyond the 2012 in terms of oxidation, for some reason (they come from the same cellar) Taste is full, thick, more oxidation than the 2012. soy sauce, less pronounced bourbon. This seems past its prime .

Bottle shared at RBBWG 2023. Opaque black color, no head. Aroma and flavor are malts, roast, umami, bourbon, soy sauce, liquorice still there but fortunately a little less than the original. The barrel aging really improves the beer. Very solid.

Sampled at 2023. Pours black, no real head. Scent is soy, full, intense, still got a woody profile. Taste is full, still quite thick and bombastic, strong woody , bourbon presence. Sure, it's aged, and shows soy, but this isn't over-the-top to me. Still way more enjoyable than the majority of (fresh) imperial stouts nowaydays.

Thinnish body, a bit sweet, a touch roasty. Some milky coffee, some bourbony heat in the finish. Impressively smooth, soft, could be more rich and intense really. Very nice though.

On tap at Capone’s. Jet black pour. Small tan ring. Sweet roasted malt aroma hints at bittersweet chocolate. Hints of oak and whiskey. Flavor follows nose. Sweet, sticky, boozy, oaky and chocolatey. All the major food groups! Definitely a slow sipper, this one.
